Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
1) Sure, there's some recency bias, and Malkin is more fandom popular. But Letang's lapses tend to be more costly, both because he is more extreme and because of his role on the team.

3) Cool, but this is Pens fans complaining about a Pens player. None of those other dirty dmen are playing for the Pens or making plays that cost the Pens when they should be doing the opposite. They can complain about Letang letting down the team without naming every single other dirty player ever.

4) ????

5) The entire complaint was about the amount of Letang fic not matching up to his fandom popularity, so lol at arguing that he isn't popular because he isn't in fic. Again, Pens fans talking about Pens fandom!!

Fandom extends beyond fic. This is something they need to learn. You know, if feelings in fandom corresponded with fic? We'd have so much more Roussel fic. AND Ghostbear fic (too tired to spell his name). And (insert name) here fic. There's lots of players fans love.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I would like more Ghostbear fic given meme's discussions of him. But yes, I agree with your larger point. In my other life writing RPF for a different sport, the 'face of the franchise' players aren't the ones that always have fic written about them.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Unless otherwise specified, I think in context here on meme the safe assumption is that we're talking about RPF fandom. And as far as I can tell, if RPF fandom likes a player, that player makes it into fic at least as a secondary player or in cameos.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Ok, and its Pens RPF fans in RPF fandom saying it's strange that there isn't more fic of Letang because he is popular amongst the Pens RPF fans they know!! Maybe that doesn't fit in with your observations, but to say that's wrong! because Letang isn't popular! because fic! misses the point completely.

I was an na, which maybe you didn't realize? Because I can't figure out how to interpret your comment in relation to mine.

Re: Fandom Venting

In the context of the conversation, it sounded like you were saying people were conflating Letang's general popularity with his RPF popularity or lack thereof (when saying that popularity =/= fic), and that if he were actually RPF popular he would have more fic.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)

My point was that I think the original new poster was talking about fic fandom, and that, yes, if Letang were popular among people in fic fandom, he would appear in more fic. So yeah, I guess? But I can't tell if you were agreeing or disagreeing with me.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
The first anon you replied to, upthread

Yes? Which is why I pulled two popular players with RPF fic fandom that have little to no fic as examples. I can't tell if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me, but it looks like the former.

Re: Fandom Venting

I think we're disagreeing, then. So what you're saying is Roussel is very popular with fic fandom fans but doesn't get cameos in fic? (Ghostbear is a harder case IMO because he's new and there isn't that much Flyers fic being written for anyone rn, so no place for him to appear.)

Re: Fandom Venting

Yes, I am saying that. And as the Stars are getting fic about them, I can quickly open the latest dozen or so Stars-centric fic on AO3 and ctrl+f his name.

He got one mention in one fic (just a, oh, Rous was there).

Re: Fandom Venting

Huh. Well, I accept that as a counterexample, and now I'm really curious to know why he doesn't show up more.

Re: Fandom Venting

I think Stars fic on the whole tends to focus on Benn/Seguin and as Roussel doesn't seem to be in their immediate circle or whatever, it takes more effort to include him? But that doesn't mean fandom likes him any less. He's very popular irl and on twitter/tumblr. The liking just manifests differently if that makes sense.

I'm more curious to see it hold now that Jamie's now a #catclub member.

Well, according to fandom, their immediate circle starts and ends at Jordie Benn and Demers. Soooooo.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I'm pretty sure that's because a bunch of Benn/Seguin fic is written by people who aren't generally Stars fans and got their info from other fic. I guess that's just the way of a juggernaut. Personally, I'd like to see more of Hemsky as a bg character - Segs went to the Bieber show with him and Faksa.

Re: Fandom Venting

NA And there were those cute little videos of Jamie and Hemsky with the giant jenga! They clearly hang out together (even if it was a couples thing)

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I keep reading that as you saying that Jamie Benn and Ales Hemsky went to a couples' thing together.

It's not like that comes out of thin air though. Jordie is Jamie's brother and they used to live in the same building so... Plus, Jason Demers clearly hangs out with them. I mean, they had a group halloween costume and everything.

It's the "ends with" that's the problem. They have other friends, too.

I'm not really agreeing or disagreeing with you so much as you're missing the point. The people talking about Letang's surprising lack of fic despite his popularity are also talking about fic fandom. He is popular with people who write fic. You can say that you disagree with their evaluation of how popular Letang is, but you can't tell them they're wrong because you noticed that Letang doesn't appear much in fic, when that's the very thing they were pointing out and seeking and explanation for in the first place. It's circular reasoning.

I wasn't saying that, though, or at least that is not what I meant to say, which is that I can't tell that Letang is very popular with fic fandom in any context. Like, he very rarely shows up on my Tumblr dash. Obviously that's limited by the people I follow, but it's not like I've selected for people who don't post about Letang. This is as opposed to Flower, for example, who doesn't get much shippy fic about him but shows up in fic all the time on the side.

So, I'm not sold on Letang being evidence for "Players can be popular in fic fandom without them showing up in fic, even when a lot of fic is being written for their team."

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Fleury usually shows up as the yenta, though.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)

That's not what you said at all. You pointed out that meme usually implies an RPF context (implying you thought people were missing that context, which they weren't), and that you expect RPF popular players to appear in fic (which other people do too, hence their surprise).

Like I said, you can disagree with people's evaluations of Letang's fandom popularity (which I guess you do). But if someone says "I'm so surprised, Letang is so popular but there's no fic about him," and someone else replies, "No, you're wrong, Letang isn't popular because I haven't read fic about him"... that is circular. The original new complainer basically said that, and your first comment made it sound like you were agreeing with that.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
na As a counterpoint, Letang shows up all the time on my dash, and I don't follow a particularly Pens heavy group.
