I can't believe Russia is including fucking Voynov.

Based on a tweet I read somewhere that I cannot find now it certainly sounded like the NHL thought this might happen and is displeased and possibly going to do what they can to keep him from actually playing.

Also and maybe there's a Canadian or lawyer-type nonnie that can chime in - I feel like he might have some trouble getting into the country??

DA

Not a lawyer-type or Canadian but Googling turned up this answer: "If you have a felony or a minor conviction on your record, you may need to apply for a Temporary Resident Permit. The TRP can be secured at the border entry of Canada. If you have a single misdemeanor conviction, DUIs, and other minor offenses, you may be asked to apply for the TRP."

So Canada could reject his application (and the NHL would probably lobby hard for that). Not sure how it'd turn out though.

I mean, they wouldn't let Chris Brown into the country so I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't allow Voynov in either.

Maybe this Tweet?

Okay, I am a little surprised at Kevin being on Team Finland.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
I don't think it's that surprising. They've been generally going for NHLers for these teams and he's done well paired with Lindell in the past. On the other hand, I think it's good that Koskinen is in and not another NHL goalie for the third spot.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

I was questioning the inclusion of Rinne, and then I started naming current NHL Finnish goalies and was pretty surprised.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
Goalies are usually the strongest part of our team in national tournaments, so it was considered a weakness this year beforehand that we only had koskinen and saros. Well, what do you know, saros had two starts, both shutouts, and koskinen played like a maniac and was chosen the best goalie of the tournament. Even in our weakest our goalies can be pretty fucking good.

The Voynov thing is so tone-deaf and fucking awful that even r/hockey is mocking it.

Is he even allowed back? Won't he get arrested?

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
He was convicted in the US and the tournament is in Toronto.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
American convictions can sometimes cause border problems if you're trying to enter Canada.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
The Canadian border patrol wouldn't let my friend's husband cross because he had a DUI from the US on his record. Different circumstances obviously , but convictions in another country can definitely affect things.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
He might be stopped from entering the country, but he wouldn't be arrested, no. There's no warrant out for him; he was already convicted and served his sentence.

Faksa and Hemsky have had great chemistry for the Stars this year. I'm interested to see if that translates to the national team, especially if they find them a speedy winger to play with. (Though Faksa has also been picking up some of Hemsky's bad habits. I definitely yelled at him for a Most Ales Hemsky Play of the Game at one point during the World Champs after he zoomed off on a breakaway but didn't shoot the puck)

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
Didn't we figure out that it was a partly a Czech tendency to fall down? But yes. Goddamn it, stop picking up bad habits from Hemsky and Rous, Faksa!

Re: World Cup of Hockey

Sharks don't have a Russian do they? So Malkin is going to be fielding all the Voynov questions, huh.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
There is really zero reason a member of the media should ask him anything about that.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
We're talking hockey media, I'm willing to bet *somebody* will ask.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

Do they care that much about the World Cup, though?

Re: World Cup of Hockey

Jaskin made the team for the Czech Republic! This pleases me.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
Same here, nonny! He looked good in the games he played in the playoffs.

There are some question marks surrounding his future with the Blues after this season but I'm hoping he has a place on the team. His shooting percentage was awful. Largely a case of truly terrible luck, I think. (Please don't trade him, Army.)

Re: World Cup of Hockey

Yeah, I really hope he gets to stay up next year and he doesn't get traded. He looked really good earlier this season with Fabbri and... crap, I think they had them with Stastny? It's been awhile and my memory is fuzzy. But either way, that line looked really good, but they couldn't buy a goal, and it was especially bad for poor Jaskin.

But he did look really great in the playoffs and I really want them to give him another chance. Especially since Barbashev might make the show soonish, depending on what happens with Backes, and those two were like magic together in Juniors. I really want to see how it translates to the NHL!

(Also, Army, if you could re-sign Upshall and Brodziak that would be excellent. Thanks.)

Wait, maybe it was Gomez and not Stastny, since that might have been when Stas was out? I can't keep track of any of the lines from earlier in the season because of all the injuries, lol. This is going to bug me now.

We're on the same wavelength on the wishes for Upshall and Brodziak re-signings, nonny! If only the decisions on Backes and Brouwer could be as easy. Both of them could command all the money on the open market and both seem to really want to stay. Seems like we're only going to get to keep one of the two. Sigh.

As for Jaskin's lineys, he was shuffled around a bit. I most remember him playing with Fabs and Jori mid-season and not looking or doing too bad. Admittedly I kept a closer eye on Robby's year.
