Yeah, "scrappy misfits" tends to mean in comparison to other teams as a whole. CBJ is scrappy misfits. A perennial contender with a long team pedigree, not so much.

(I'm torn on whether or not to call the Sharks scrappy misfits, since even their stars are all kind of weird outliers, but they aren't exactly a Cinderella team either.)

I agree. The only reason the Pens are even labeled as "underachievers" at all is because the expectation is super high ('Cup or bust') and that's a testament to how high the talent level is perceived to be.

I was waiting for someone to bring up CBJ. They're just bad, I don't see them as scrappy misfits. They have a Vezina winning goalie and young stars; none of them are misfits. They just suck as a team because they weren't properly built.

What do you mean by not properly built? What should they have doing instead? I was under the impression that a lot of their issues were down to money and coaching.

I mean, exactly, money. You can't have a properly built team in a salary capped league if you're overpaying guys like Foligno and Dubinsky and Jack Johnson on long, expensive contracts. Every team has some of those, but CBJ has too many.

I more meant money in terms of not having enough of it - they're a budget team, after all. But I've never looked too closely at what they did with the money they did have, so, thanks.

I wouldn't really consider them a budget team. This season they ended up only $3.4 mil short of the cap ceiling (by comparison, the Ducks were $7.4 mil short). Their actual salary expenditure was a little less, but when I think "budget team," I think of teams perennially looking to meet the floor, which CBJ is not.

This blows up all my impressions of them, then. Now their perpetual basement dwelling is a little funnier.

I feel like I don't see bloggers talking about them or the roster a lot, either. If anyone has any recentish articles (last year or two) they'd recommend, I'd appreciate them. I'm curious now!

They are pretty scrappy, at least.

I don't think you could really describe any NHL teams as "scrappy". When I think scrappy, I think, like, the Mighty Ducks. Not the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, but the Mighty Ducks of Minneapolis coached by Gordon Bombay.
