Re: Fandom Venting

This is about fandom in general, not just hockey, but when are we going to stop writing fics where people threaten~ whoever their friends are dating. Does anyone actually do this irl and if so are they completely insane? Stop the "hurt him and you're dead" bullshit, I'm begging you.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I've had friends do that for me, the whole "hurt her and I break your fingers," but I don't think they were serious? I hope not at least. But it happens.

Re: Fandom Venting

This is honestly so weird to me. It always bothers me in fic even when it's supposedly all a joke.

Re: Fandom Venting

I agree and can I add another pretty common trope I really hate? This whole "it was so obvious that you two should be hooking up/are made for each other that we bet on it" thing. No. It's tired in romcom stuff and in more dramatic writing it just cheapens any struggle that was had.

lol, sorry to hijack your thread, OP! But I just hate both of these so much and they often seem to come in pairs, idk. Some romcom tropes need to be retired.

Now I think that should be a drinking game (pick a fairly random selection of short fics that look tropey, drink whenever either betting pools or shovel talks happen. Extra drink required if they co-exist in the same story. Or something, idk.)

Re: Fandom Venting

I feel like you'd get very drunk, especially if you picked stories from around 2013 onward lol!

Right there with you.

And to piggyback, the thing where the character's friends decide they need to get out / need to date more, and so they take the character out and set them up on dates against their will. No. If I had friends that tried that on me more than once, they would not be my friends anymore.

Well, in hockey that kind of relationship is more convincing than it is in a lot of fandoms, as they have very... hothouse lives, I guess, constantly in each other's space, as well as being on the whole pretty rowdy. I could well believe that hockey players would be aggressive in hooking up a friend, or that they'd run a betting pool. (Although with the whole Fine Master thing it seems more likely the new couple would have to pay out.)

That is fair. I think it's one of those things where I just never am going to enjoy reading it, however realistic it is, because I find it stressful. :\

Well, I guess it's also true that many authors who write this kind of thing aren't thinking "Hm, these characters are forced together a lot of the time and highly physical, perhaps it might be appropriate for one of them to be a bit aggressive here?" They're just writing the trope without much thought.

I'd be interested in a fic with a lot of betting rings, maybe played for farce, with characters all trying to manipulate events. It would work fine as gen, too.

Now I want to read this in a scenario where the other players just think they're being good buddies hooking up a bro right up until the guy literally screams at them. Or hits them in actual anger. Or starts actively refusing to go out with the boys. Or all of this in escalation, possibly ending in the dude coming out as gay or asexual in a fit of anger. And the hockey bros still not butting out and offering to hook him up with this gay guy they know instead.

Re: Fandom Venting

Part of why it sounds more plausible to me in hockey is because you can't just find new friends - at least, you can cut down on team interaction, but cutting them out entirely is going to get you labeled locker room cancer and could very well damage your career. Someone probably isn't going to do that for the relatively minor issue of "helpful" teammates, even if it's irritating as fuck.

+1
It's going to be my new explanation for Carter's CBJ sulk. They were just trying to help!

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I appreciate this.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
NA is rolling with this idea of disgruntled gay Jeff Carter! But with additional sulking over a break-up with a Richie, who he still talks to all the time. (They're bad at breaking up.)

Re: Fandom Venting

Isn't there at least one fic with this? Complete with Jordan Staal trying to set up Sidney with at least one of his brothers, because c'mon, he has a lot of those, and he wants one cool brother-in-law, is all he's saying.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
You maybe thinking of that oflights S/G crap that spawned some Marc Staal/Letang pair the spares nonsense?

Re: Fandom Venting

na

I feel like you're confusing "pair the spares" with "rarepair."

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I never read that oflights fic, but I kind of liked the Marc Staal/Letang one.

I think in that Jordan actually had a brother who was gay and tried to match Sid up with him, rather than just requiring any brother to take one for the family.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
...I've done it IRL. And had it done on my behalf as well. I'm just super protective of those closest to me, okay.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I always thought the "shovel talk" was some weird American thing, like a girl's father cleaning his gun or rifle when her boyfriend comes over for the first time. I hope neither of these happen very often IRL.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I can't parse this comment at all. On the one hand it sounds like you're saying you think Americans do that kind of stuff and then you say you hope it doesn't happen in real life.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Weird American thing you see, but while they believe Americans do that stuff, they don't think it happens often. Or at least hope so.
