Re: Hockey Media

Am I just being oversensitive, or is calling Phil Kessel's production "plus-sized" a really tired fat joke randomly thrown in this otherwise complimentary and informative article?

That's how it reads to me, too. Is there some other use of the word "plus-sized"? I can't think of one off-hand.

"While many foresaw plus-sized production when he came to Pittsburgh in a trade after the 2014-15 season, but Kessel’s 59 points fell short of expectations."

It's not even a grammatical sentence, smh.

+ 1 to all of this.

I may have a soft spot for Phil Kessel because he's taken so much shit for his body type and as far as I'm concerned that's bullshit on any number of levels. (Fat-shaming is *never* cool, he's a cancer survivor so it's not impossible that his fat storage was affected by that, and his actual professional numbers speed/endurance/conditioning-wise do NOT bear out any kind of "too fat to skate" narrative imo.)

Did you read the puck daddy feature on Phil? I literally teared up at my desk some parts of it were so heartbreaking.

"ESPN The Magazine published a piece that chronicled Kessel’s NHL draft combine experience, through the eyes of the Columbus Blue Jackets’ managerial staff.

There are other questions. About his relationships with teammates. About his rep as a party guy. Then Boyd goes directly to the scouting report. "How would you respond to this: 'A little bit immature, needs to work a little harder in the gym, practice a little harder, needs to learn some social skills, people skills.' We'll leave it at that."

Kessel's voice falls to a whisper. "I'd say, okay...yeah a little bit...some of that stuff...it's a little hard...work on some of that stuff, I guess."

It's over soon after that. Kessel looks disheartened as he leaves. MacLean looks sad. "If what they're saying about this kid isn't true, it's criminal. Because I don't know if I ever heard the negative stuff like I have with this kid."

I can only imagine the sheer will to succeed and strength of character he has. I would have peaced out long before that point.

ayrt

I'm rooting for the Sharks (old guys without a Cup + Cupless franchise + everybody I *really* wanted is out) but Kessel getting a Cup ring would be a nice consolation prize.

If his Pittsburgh media presence bears any resemblance to his actual off-camera self, the people skills/"locker room cancer" issues are just as much bullshit as the "too fat to play" body ones. (Also, although I seriously doubt *Kessel's* anywhere on the autism spectrum, something about him getting told he needs to learn social/people skills makes my neurodivergent self cringe.)

And even if it's not his having cancer (though, honestly, it might be given how skinny he was in Boston before the surgery), it doesn't matter because he's clearly better conditioned than a lot of guys - every time they bring up his body type, I just want to go la la la, here's him skating against Seguin and Seguin's abs and winning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PuUliGtNW4

Re: Hockey Media

Yeah, it's SO CLEARLY not a statement on his ability but how he looks.

It's so ridiculous. I could laugh at it, maybe, if it weren't so prevalent. It's everywhere, even in paid articles by otherwise sensible people.

Re: Hockey Media

Plus, his dad was a football player, so he likely started with a naturally stocky body type in addition.

Re: Hockey Media

Yeah imo that's really gross.
