#24 – Not Sure If Serious or Playing Dumba

A good idea in what sense? If you're asking whether you'd get more or less readers with an AU than with a fic with hockey in it, I honestly have no idea, but I'd be curious to know what other people say. I personally probably wouldn't read a non-hockey AU unless I was really hard up, but that's true even for most of my semi-large pairings.

na - as a writer I have the same question. As a reader, though, I don't have a team that I feel all that possessive of, so mostly any good fic is good fic, AU or otherwise. I would be more salty if it were clearly heads are pastede on an original story idea yay,

if it's rare players in addition to a rare pairing, and not players who have particularly strong hockey or archetype personas (bruiser with a heart of gold, ~undrafted success story~, hothead, has 35 pets, noted idiot, whatever) that appear in the fic, that's the point where I might nope out of the eleventy billionth high school/coffee shop/space pirate AU, out of spite.

(Also, not a rare pair, but I am still not sure who the hell Geno was meant to be in that horse racing AU, and am still pretty mad about it. You are unlikely to have such a problem.)

Yeah, I feel like either strong archetypes or good specific characterization is even more important for AUs than other kinds of fic, especially if the players aren't ones most people know.
