Re: Hockey Media

It's a bit flippant, and I don't know why this saint's story is supposedly more crazy than any other saint's, or more so than other religious/Christian stories in general (I am not religious, if you can't tell). Sounds to me like the writer's a bit uncomfortable with the subject. It doesn't seem to take Ovechkin's spiritual/religious pursuits with much gravity, but I'm not seeing where it's offensive, exactly.

to be honest, i can't quite figure out why my knee-jerk reaction was to find it offensive either? i think it's basically because the author is obviously totally clueless about the basic facts and yet he's reporting on it without taking a couple of minutes to at least read a relevant wikipedia article, i guess. i mean, "Though it’s located in northern Greece, the monastery has “historical and liturgical” ties to the Russian Orthodox Church.", that's like saying that st. patrick's cathedral has historical and liturgical ties to the roman catholic church, even though it's located in the united states.

He's writing for an audience that might know fuck all about the Russian Orthodox church, though? IDK. It seems like a normal RMNB "look what goofy thing Ovi is doing this summer" article, but instead of an ice bucket challenge or ridiculously expensive vacation, it's 3 days in an orthodox monastery.

well, yeah, but isn't his job as a writer to actually learn about the topic he's writing about and then tell something about it to his audience? i'm not saying a random rmnb post demands new yorker-like effort, but expecting a couple minutes of googling don't seem unreasonable, at least if he doesn't want to come across as totally ignorant. *shrug*

Someone else pointed out that the writer literally quoted Wikipedia, which is about as much research as I would expect on the topic from RMNB on a fluff piece about Ovi's summer. Like, could he have done more research? Sure. But I'm not sure it's disrespectful that he just Wiki'd the name of the place.

I complain about RMNB all the time, but I'm pretty meh on this one.

DA -I think that actually is a quote from wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Panteleimon_Monastery

The article just reads like he's gone on holiday and I think getting into one of the monasteries is actually more difficult than that, although it might be easier if you are famous.

subthread op

the funny thing is, these monasteries, for all that they're supposed to be about denouncing the world and worldly things, will bend over backwards for the rich/famous/influential (dudes, fuck females though), it's like the religious equivalent of a high end spa. and it's even funnier that my first reaction was like, rmnb is being disrespectful! when at my chillest i'm 1000% more disrespectful of the whole thing. the difference, i guess, is that i know what i'm disrespecting? like i said, idek.

There's a big difference imo between disrespect that arises from being rightfully critical about something that you are knowledgable about, and disrespect of something that is ~funny and ~strange to you because you're ignorant of it. Finding information about a church on wikipedia is "knowledge" in the sense of trivial information, but doesn't actually change the nature of that disrespect.

At least for me, it read a lot like the author was trying to say, "Can you believe people believe this shit?" Which is like... IDK, in-group, out-group, being religious or observing something religious doesn't actually mean you're incapable of independent thought, etc.
