Re: General post-SCF thread

I think everyone who played in the playoffs should get their name on the cup. I get that Dupuis is a well-liked guy and his retirement was slightly premature, but he already has two cups and his season contributions were like two points in November. I think he's received enough love this year.

I think if you asked the team they would say his contributions were more than points.

(Also what do you mean he already has two Cups? Wasn't the 2009 one his first?)

Sure, but they'd probably say the same about all the other guys too. I'm not against him being on there, I just think it shouldn't come at the expense of guys who actually played. No disrespect to Duper.

I was thinking of Kunitz. My bad.

There's no reason why Dupuis' inclusion can only come at the expense of a player who played in the playoffs, and vice versa. Even if you leave Dupuis off, if you assume the 25 players is hard and fast, that still doesn't leave enough room for all who played. If the Penguins choose to include front office names at the expense of players, that's their choice and shows what they value. No reason to pin that on Dupuis not being sufficiently deserving when he's done everything in the capacity of a good teammate except actually play games. I think that people who write off the importance of this moment for Dupuis forget that his last playoff series was the 2013 sweep against the Bruins. This is the last chance for him to be honored as a player, I don't see how you don't give it to him.

You don't think that "actually playing games" is an important part of winning a championship? I don't necessarily disagree with what you wrote, but my comment was based on the idea that his inclusion would exclude someone who played in the playoffs. If that's not an issue, then I have no problem with it. But I do think that Duper has been honored enough this season. Especially considering that if he were still playing, people would be complaining about him the same way they do about Kunitz.

I don't think the one or two games each that Bennett/Pouliot/Sundqvist have played in the playoffs, in roles that different call-ups could have played just as well, necessarily means they had a bigger impact than a player who they gave a special role as some kind of coach (I forgot what they called it) because they valued his off-ice contributions so much. As sorry as I would be for any of those three not to have their names on the Cup, I can see the reasoning behind choosing Duper instead if they have to pick.

Eh, if you're on a team and you win a championship, you're a champion. I think it's pretty unfair to try and distinguish between which players are more deserving of what because everyone has a role to play. I'm pretty sure those guys were still practicing with the team and they all had to be ready to go in case they were called to play again. At the end of the day, Duper isn't a player anymore, so as a player, his contributions were not as valuable. If they want to include him with the staff, that's cool.

Obviously it is, but if it's the only or even the most important criterion you're going to use to talk about deserving to be on the cup, there are plenty of front office people who didn't play any games either. And by that logic, why is a guy like Bennett who only played 1 game and contributed nothing to the cup win any more deserving? Even if the Pens do decide they can't include another player because they've given that spot to Dupuis, that isn't on Dupuis and has nothing to do with how deserving he is or isn't. That's a choice they've made, not one the league has forced on them.
