Wow nonny that is some idfic right there. Not my idfic but good stuff nonetheless.

Mine would be more like Nate Mackinnon, master pastry chef grew up with his best friend Jo Drounin, máster cake decorator. But they were cruelly forced apart when their internships took then far from each other. Nate found great success at Avalanche Bakeries while Jo struggled as his cruel boss Yzerman denied him the chance to practice his craft. Nate and Jo find themselves drifting apart as Nate's star shines while Jo seems to fade. And then Nate is spotted with legendary pastry god Sidney Crosby and Jo wonders if it's too late after all. Obviously this being my idfic, there is a crisis at Lightning Cakery and Jo saves the day with his master decorating skills and decides to fight for Nate. He drives all the way to Nova Scotia to interrupt what he thinks is Nate's wedding to Crosby (actually just secret pastry lessons) and throws himself into Nate's arms and they live happily ever after with amazing baked goods.

Yeah, they talked each other up a lot. Hagelin defended Kessel a lot in interviews, for example.

Like nonnie above me said, I was talking about women in hockey, not women overall. I don't know what you think a poll about women in the US has to do with a population that's largely Canadian, anyway.

*head desk* No, I can't use overall patterns to predict how other subsets will behave. NOR WAS I CLAIMING THAT. I wouldn't even use it to make claims about hockey people in general because the stat is specific to the US. I was just mentioning it as an example of women not being as different from men, and people in general being far more homophobic than people realize a lot of the day. That's a rather unique misreading. Sorry, if this isn't you, but are you the person upthread that's claiming that someone demanded sociological proof that hockey players are more conservative than other groups? Because that sounds like a similar misrepresentation (misunderstanding?) about the conversation that people don't have to believe that all hockey players are voting for Trump.

Anyway, the comment I to here was not clear to me who they were referring to, I guess. I thought they meant that women who comment in hockey fandom were more LGBT-friendly than men who do. If they meant pro players, I think the fact that you've got semi-out female players and not even retired male ones who are semi-out speaks for itself. There have been out retired players in other North American sports like football for over 40 years now.

Taking it out of sports, for example, whenenver an anti-gay politician or ~religious~ right spokesperson starts really going at the rhetoric people suggest that they are protesting too much and probably secretly gay. Do you really consider that tinhatting?

I don't care so much about the anthem, but I wish they'd stop with the salute to soldiers and military personnel.

Re: Fandom Venting

AYRT - It is super iddy which is why I wouldn't admit it unanon.

Oh bad Yzerman not letting Jo Drouin decorate cakes until he saves the day. I would enjoy your version also!

I don't think that's quite the same thing, as I think there's a certain amount of homophobia in that rhetoric. ("The gays are doing it to themselves, haha" or "lol, he's probably just so fucked up by our incredibly homophobic culture that he's trying to pass legislation that will destroy himself, isn't that hilarious?". Neither are good looks imo.)

But I agree with you that it's not believing someone might be gay that's tinhatting; it's warping or inventing the "evidence" no matter what reality is telling you.

I wasn't that anon, but it seems like you're carrying over a grudge from that previous conversation about Trump (which I did not participate in). By your own admission, you're the one who misunderstood what people were talking to. Maybe getting so ott about it isn't the best way to move forward from that point.

I need the fic where MacKinnon is super smug that he locked Drouin down when they were sixteen and now look, he has a super hot boyfriend tbh

I honestly don't know how you'd think that we were talking about women in hockey fandom. The OP's comment was entirely about players and the pro community.

I think the fact that you've got semi-out female players and not even retired male ones who are semi-out speaks for itself.

No kidding!

I'm always trying to find ways to shove actual canon into my wild AUs even if it's sometimes a stretch so I figured Jo can come "save" the Lightning like he sort of did good in the playoffs and Sid and Nate's summer Nova Scotia adventures and training can just be pastry training.

There's also the tragedy of the Oilers Bakery where wunderkind young bakers go to suffer but I haven't fleshed it out too much. Ovechkin is of course an artiste and everyone is baffled how Brent Burns hasn't gotten in trouble with a health code violation.

I probably wouldn't call it that, just because I normally only use that term in a fandom context. But just suggesting as a one off thing is different than being invested in believing it, which is something else I associate with tinhatting. So that situation would probably be borderline tinhatting, I guess.

G-loves! That's such an I-was-a-90s-teen way to nickname oneself. Also, his poem sounds less like a poem and more like hip-hop. He and Matt Nieto should collaborate one of these days.

I suppose it makes those secret writer fics more plausible.

Seriously, Scott Gomez just became 1000x more interesting to me. I wish it was known about him back when he was playing that he spent all his traveling time writing poetry. I don't think he was a popular fic character, but even including that in the background of a fic would have been fun.

Initiation, I won’t go there
I’ll keep that inside with pride
But holy shit
If the public knew what happened
On those long bus rides…

:( I don't want to know. I just want it to stop. Fucking junior.

Plus, they have obvious on-ice chemistry (their numbers shot up as soon as they were put together - even before HBK).

12ways - I love both their Alex Galchenyuk fics. I could be wrong, I could be ready is a favorite and I'm not even into the Gallys as a ship.

Re: Fandom Venting

This reminded me that Wysh commented on puck soup (in response to a question about which hockey players were/were likely to be trump supporters) that they were for the most part socially liberal and fiscally conservative. No receipts, obvs, but it was a thing he said.

Maybe the Sharks run a trendy San Jose dog bakery instead of a people bakery? (Less stringent health code, probably.) I feel like it fits with their...everything. Vlasic's million dogs could be the taste-testers.

It's not a big mystery; I misread this sentence: Fandom's having fun tearing into Torts because they already hated him anyways, but others aren't better, and the women aren't any better than the men.

I don't follow women's hockey very closely, but I seem to remember someone bringing up a fair amount of women hockey players being fairly conservative the last time people were talking about the CWHL's failed YCP campaign.

I misunderstood who people were talking about, not what. Even if I had been talking about the same group of people, there was nothing about trying to figure out how specific people would behave like you wrote. So, yes, I misunderstood one thing, but I still think you were misreading my comment independent of that.

I don't know what's so OTT about bringing up a possible similar misunderstanding. Like I said, sorry, if it isn't you.

Re: Fandom Venting

I disagree with Torts but given his family-military connection I can't say I'm surprised by his answer.

There was a discussion on reddit last year about how Ovi sometimes starts skating midway through the anthem, but fans don't really mind (although sometimes he gets booed). Caps fans, is that a regular thing that he does? :)

I just wish people would sing the damn song. I've had enough of your American Idol wannabe "interpretation." Interpret in the fucking shower and in front of a television audience please just sing the song as written.

Re: Fandom Venting

Keith Olbermann has said the same thing about professional players (he was talking about all sports, but he was including hockey). Something like, blah, blah, blah, you can't play on teams with people from all over the world without being able to get along with lots of different kinds of people and lifestyles and beliefs and orientations etc. But they all want a Flat Tax.
