I liked it. I didn't feel like it was very hockeybot-ish - it was mentioned a few times that hockey came first for Sid, but that was basically it as far as I could tell.

The only problem I really had was with the epilogue. I liked the sadness and the friction, how thoroughly Nate wanted something that Sid couldn't give him and how broken up he was over it. But for Sid to show up on Nate's doorstep some number of years later and for Nate to just accept it was unsatisfying. I could've bought it with more work, but it's frustrating in its current form.

IMO, "I can't date you even secretly because hockey" is very hockeybot-ish. It's a classic Sid trope. And then at the end he says the closest he ever got to a relationship was Nate and that's just so pathetic and spacetoaster. The narrative repeated that it was more about hockey than just being closeted, too.

I can see what you mean, but it didn't come across that way to me. Between his absent-minded mention of "maybe one day with the right person" and the "I can't" it seemed more like he just wasn't in a place emotionally where he could date anyone. Of course his reasons for being closeted and a lot of that whole emotional state stemmed from hockey, but that seems different to me than the more direct "can't date because hockey." But I think what's there supports either reading.

I can admit I'm sensitive to it because it just comes up so much in other fics. And I'm inclined to think the author would be following that trend.

Not a big fan of Byfuglien, but I rather him that Jack Johnson. Seeing some of these decisions it makes me realize I hate most of the Head Coaches for this tournament.

This CGI ad situation on the boards is freaking me out. I have no feelings about the hockey.

Team Europe's looking pretty good.

I don't like this thing ESPN is doing of flicking briefly over to SoG where the score is. It's fine if they don't want it on the screen all the time, but they can put it next to or underneath the score, not replace it.

It's so distracting. On the one hand, I want them to correct the color & contrast so it's not so obviously CGI. On the other hand, this is some real /r/conspiracy-level technology, yo.

That Gaborik/Nielsen/Zucc line is straight fire.

Yeah, they are. And that line who scored looked good in the second North America pre-season game too, so maybe it's a coincidence, but I can't help but wonder if it was a good idea to choose Quick to start when he's the only one who has two teammates on that team. Three if you count Ehrhoff. I suppose that can cut both ways, but it seems like they'll know his tendencies.

My understanding of the tropes is that "spacetoaster" refers to Sid's discomfort w/ normal human interaction and/or most social situations (a.k.a. a mechanical space case), whereas "hockeybot" referred to the conception that he has no life outside of hockey (a.k.a. a robot built for hockey and put away in a storage unit when not on the rink). But maybe it's just me?

Now Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Nathan MacKinnon is a pairing I could get behind.

It's the fact that the ads switch back to the standard boards in other camera angles that is getting me, more than the ads themselves or their quality. Like, any time it's a replay, my brain is telling me "that's not what happened" because the background is different.

I cannot lie. He won me over with the purse dog Instagram. It still makes me laugh today.

The glitch in the matrix when Kopitar went into the boards a while back was a nice touch
