From: (Anonymous)He has a doctorate. The Russian ministry education guidelines are that the Kandidat nauk should be treated as equivalent to a doctorate in countries that only have one doctorate level, and most US universities follow that guideline.

From: (Anonymous)I've seen this movie before.

From: (Anonymous)If you have all of that stuff the same, than again, I think you're just changing the names, and it's silly.

From: (Anonymous)*shrugs* You can also change the politics (different country), academic focus, most popular sport, attitudes towards magical creatures in that area of the world, attitudes towards and amount of mixing with muggles, etc. etc. I'm just saying that you can have a fic that's an HP AU without being a Hogwarts AU, and that such a fic wouldn't be a Hogwarts AU with the serial numbers filed off.

From: (Anonymous)Yeah, I imagine it's especially tough for him because the two groups seem split into Olds (but not actually old, Stamkos and Hedman are 25 and 26) and Youths, but all of the youths that he could potentially get along with are super loyal to Cooper, and he had major issues with Cooper and how much ice time he was giving him. They seem mostly over that now, but who knows if that was an obstacle to any friendship time bonding. I certainly hope he has friends, lol. He can hang with the Russians! (who I suspect are their own group, with Namestnikov kind of floating in between since he speaks the most English)

From: (Anonymous)McDavid also said he wouldn't want to play for team NA again in the future, so I am personally questioning his commitment to this fake team that he's supposedly the captain of!!

From: (Anonymous)Ooh, links to that? I want to speculate about it semi-baselessly and could use the exact wording.
Re: Game day thread 22 Sept 2016
From: (Anonymous)We'll never know I'd bet and you'll never hear media question McDavid over this, but it's NAGL, in my opinion.

From: (Anonymous)The fic does cover their Sorting, a little of their Hogwarts years, and then they're working as Aurors. The fact that they're Slytherins is important to both of them within the fic.
I don't necessarily disagree with you, in terms of ease of AU writing? Like I said, most of the time I give these arguments in the context of random Sorting conversations. Castiel a Gryffindor? Nope, Castiel's a monster in the forbidden forest. NEXT. Ovi's in Slytherin? Ovi wouldn't even go to Hogwarts. NEXT.
I do think you could easily write a Hogwarts AU or post-Hogwarts AU without sorting non-U.K. characters into Hogwarts houses, if you really wanted. The Goblet of Fire has students and professors visiting from different wizarding schools. You could have wizards moving to the U.K. and working as Aurors, since I don't recall anything about that being against the rules in the wizarding world. I'm not saying that's what everyone should be doing, since I think people write these things to replicate Hogwarts and the things they liked about Hogwarts, but it is a possibility.
Re: Game day thread 22 Sept 2016
From: (Anonymous)I mean it's not a stretch to think most of them would prefer to be playing for Canada/USA (especially the NTDP Americans) but I'm kind of surprised he just...said it.

From: (Anonymous)Thanks! And I'm definitely sympathetic to that mindset. As much fun as it ended up being, I thought Team North America was gimmicky and pointless from the beginning, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the players felt the same way. What he actually said was pretty mild, all things considered.
