I am shaking M/M rares gifts, and uh, there is a Giroux/Giroud fic. I am so excited to read this in a week.

There's a Kari/Nemo fic there now too. I'm impatient for the collection to open but the mod says it will be tomorrow night.

So if anyone wants to read Kari/Nemo in Cabo! Or Giroud/Giroux, it's there

I had much higher hopes for the Giroux/Giroud fic. It's just...so bland? Poorly researched, too.

Hopefully Kari/Nemo is worth staying up for.

... Like, how poorly researched? I was going to read this when I got home, but if it's unforgivably inaccurate then I might have to give it a pass. :(

DA - There was a lot of vagueness for me, Giroud was pretty much just a description. I was a bit confused by how they would keep meeting in Paris, apparently spontaneously, I figure they would need to plan more, and if it was happening during their seasons how did Giroux just head off.

Yeah, like Giroud would text and ask about meeting up, and then Giroux would fly to Paris. From Philadelphia.

It's also missing a glaring logic hole that they don't know each other's names for most of the fic, and they never talk about what they do for a living. They never talk about it.

There are a lot of glaring logic holes, really. The execution is just terrible all around. Very little is adequately explained. Which is a shame, as the central concept (they have soulmarks, but they're both such sloppy writers that they think it's their own names on their arms) is actually kind of hilarious.

Giroud is a true Frenchman but in this fic he's basically 100℅ a North American bro in his dialogue. He's so OOC that he's just a badly written OC here (utterly generic, no personality, merely a plot device).

And I second what the other posters are saying about messy logic/plot holes.

I will credit the fic for having good SPAG, so at least there's that.

Bland sums it up perfectly, I think. It's a fic that exists but that's about all.

There are some really great fics in the M/M rares collection overall. This one doesn't deserve to be the most kudosed.

The hit count is insane though (it has over 3x the hits of the next highest hit counts, which are juggernaut fandoms like MCU and Teen Wolf), so I wonder what's up with that.

NAYRT It was discussed on FFA too so that might have driven traffic to look at it.

I think that in those fandoms a lot of the people are there for the big pairings more than the rare pairs, so only a small fraction of the people in those fandoms are going to be looking.

Oh yeah, that makes sense.

And I know in Football RPF, people will check out everything in the tag if it's a popular player, so that's a lot of built-in clicks in itself.

lol you're definitely right about the bigger fandoms. I read MCU fic pretty regularly, but I legit will not even bother clicking on a fic if it doesn't look like my OTP is endgame by the tags.

I'm surprised by all the disappointment in this fic. Is there something I missed? It seems like such a random ship to get all excited about, even for Giroux stans.

We all wanted more cross sports ships. I think the bar we expected was a decent one: memorable, both characters in the ship have personality.

It doesn't meet either of those qualities.

And it didn't help that M/M Rares went over schedule and opened the collection a couple of days late. That delay just resulted in more time for more hype/expectations to be amped up even further.

Overall, it's just kind of discouraging for cross-sports ships. I'll definitely be more tentative about requesting one in the future.

What kind of cross sports ships are you looking to see? I'm always down for marginal players finding refuge in one another.

Personally I'd love some Giroux crossover fic, but I don't understand why Giroud over someone on the Eagles or the 76ers. He looked pretty cute next to JJ Watt, even.

Well I was a fervant Giroux/Giroud enthusiast (that could probably still could be salvaged by a well done fic), and I liked all the talk about Sidney Crosby/Aaron Rodgers in past deke threads.

But I also agree with you about the appeal of marginal/lesser known players finding solace in someone from a different sport but similar situation.

It's that different-yet-similar dynamic that makes the idea of cross sports ships incredibly interesting to me. Like, players may not be aware of the super specific/inner details of their partner's sport, but there are many things universal about sports so there are many general commonalities. They understand the competitive drive to win and be the best, the desire to fit in and belong with the guys, the pressures of fame, the responsibilites of leadership and being a good teammate, the devastation of injuries, the fickle nature of contract negotiations etc etc
