Commiserations!! :(

I saw pointed tweets after I posted my first proper fic, saying 'I wish someone would write (my fic's premise) but (with one the key details I agonised over) being different'.

And then there was a 30-tweet discussion in a little group and I sat sadly on the sidelines, feeling glum because I couldn't get anyone interested in chatting about it on Twitter while i was writing the damn thing.

DA joining the commiserations chorus.

My main beta, reading an early draft: "I'm not sure because I don't know a lot about this player, but maybe characterization problem?"

Me: "Good point!" [revises to fix the problem]

Me: "idk though is it fixed?"

Two additional betas, one who knows a lot about player in question, I checked in with for this specific issue: "yeah it's fixed and BTW awesome job!"

Random commenters after fic posts: "I really didn't like how [player] was [characterization issue that THREE PEOPLE told me was fixed]..."

Me: "WTF? Guess there is no pleasing some people."

FWIW, sometimes people are just... incorrect, when it comes to something be wrong in a fic vs. an authorial decision. I'm far from a faultless writer, but some of the complaints I've seen have been from people missing things on their end (e.g. "This was frustrating, should've fixed it" ... no? I meant for the audience to be frustrated at that point?).

Or disagreeing with characterization, which is subjective anyway.

Agreed. Just like people are wrong about your fav canon, people are wrong about your fic. The real trick is to figure out which criticism is worth caring about.
