Re: Fandom Venting

Someone vague blogged mean things about a fic and I'm almost positive that it was mine. I wouldn't even mind that much if it was but the uncertainty is killing meeeeeeeeeeee.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
This happened to me a few weeks ago and I am still a little upset about it. I feel your pain.

Re: Fandom Venting

Commiserations!! :(

I saw pointed tweets after I posted my first proper fic, saying 'I wish someone would write (my fic's premise) but (with one the key details I agonised over) being different'.

And then there was a 30-tweet discussion in a little group and I sat sadly on the sidelines, feeling glum because I couldn't get anyone interested in chatting about it on Twitter while i was writing the damn thing.

DA joining the commiserations chorus.

My main beta, reading an early draft: "I'm not sure because I don't know a lot about this player, but maybe characterization problem?"

Me: "Good point!" [revises to fix the problem]

Me: "idk though is it fixed?"

Two additional betas, one who knows a lot about player in question, I checked in with for this specific issue: "yeah it's fixed and BTW awesome job!"

Random commenters after fic posts: "I really didn't like how [player] was [characterization issue that THREE PEOPLE told me was fixed]..."

Me: "WTF? Guess there is no pleasing some people."

Re: Fandom Venting

FWIW, sometimes people are just... incorrect, when it comes to something be wrong in a fic vs. an authorial decision. I'm far from a faultless writer, but some of the complaints I've seen have been from people missing things on their end (e.g. "This was frustrating, should've fixed it" ... no? I meant for the audience to be frustrated at that point?).

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Or disagreeing with characterization, which is subjective anyway.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Agreed. Just like people are wrong about your fav canon, people are wrong about your fic. The real trick is to figure out which criticism is worth caring about.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I hate that. If you're going to talk shit about it, I would rather you be less vague and more constructive criticism.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
If I'm not talking to you about your fic, why would I bother being constructive about it? Maybe I just want to vent my feelings.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
lmao, what kind of venting are you doing if you're not even saying what's wrong with it?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Obviously the kind that's being complained about in this thread? Since people are talking about coming across people saying negative things about their fic that isn't constructive??

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
So you're passive aggressive and vague about fics when you don't even expect the authors to see you? You seem like a fun, intelligible person to be around.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
That's like...a third of what meme exists to be. What are you even doing here.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I would describe very, very little on meme as passive or vague. Which is kinda the point. I'm a little amazed that you could read the complaints in this direct thread and say, hey, that's what we do here! Although I guess that validates the anon complaining about reader's comprehension?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
ayrt

Er, no I'm not? Whatever you think of how people choose to express their feelings about what they read, it's not surprising that someone tweeting for their own benefit and not that of providing helpful feedback to an author would just say "ugh I didn't like this" without specifying why?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
There's a huge difference between "I didn't like X, Y, and Z" and constructive criticism. Maybe I didn't like the story because it didn't have flying ponies. Maybe I hated the top/bottom situation. Maybe the writing was too flowery, and I can't be arsed to explain what I mean by "too flower" or pull out examples.

Disliking authorial choices =/= constructive criticism. It's just dislike. And saying something was bad doesn't make that a constructive statement, even if it's true.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
That's still more to work with than what's being complained about in this thread, since it started with not even knowing if it's their fic being talked about. I don't think anyone actually expects professional reviews, but having a single coherent thought about an established subject isn't really all that much to ask for.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
having a single coherent thought about an established subject isn't really all that much to ask for.

A random reader on the internet does not owe you anything at all. No, not even a coherent thought. "I read this fic and it sucked" is a perfectly valid expression of feelings. I don't owe it to anyone to specify what fic I'm talking about - in fact, in non-anon circles, it'd usually be considered impolite.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
... sure, anon, whatever. Enjoy being bizarrely rightous about your ability to provide shitty, shallow commentary. I roll my eyes whenever I see things identical to your "perfectly valid expression of feelings" in the fic discussion, as a reader, because it's pointless and doesn't add anything to the conversation. But, hey, that's your right! Be an unsubstantiated hater if that's all you want to offer.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
nayrt but lol.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Personal twitter accounts don't exist to be providers of commentary or contributors to conversation for you. Something isn't "unsubstantiated" just because someone hasn't accompanied an expression of their opinion (not directed towards the author or a general readership!) with arguments, proof, and textual evidence. Why should someone annotate or commentate their feelings for your benefit when they aren't even talking to you? You are the one who seems bizarrely righteous about the world not revolving around you and your desires.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
+1

This demand that readers provide constructive criticism if they dare say anything at all is a new level of entitlement. It ain't about you! If they wanted to talk about your fic to you, they would address their comments to you.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Has someone trashed your fic somewhere? Because you are taking this incredibly personally.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Someone trashes their fic so... comments without substance annoys them? Makes sense.

Honestly, the other anon isn't presenting themselves as a super fun person to interact with either. It's interesting seeing someone base their entire platform on them not being obligated to have good conversation habits, tho. A+ argument for yelling into the void in public.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I once had someone leave a bitchy comment on a fic because she said that I used the "wrong nickname" for one of the main characters since a veteran had come in with the same one and it had went to him, despite the fact the fic was from the POV from someone who had known the player in question for years and would likely use the old nickname in private/in his head. There really is no pleasing some people, nonnie. I wouldn't worry about it.
