There was a press conference today to officially announce the Winter Classic will be the Blackhawks @ the Blues.

The Blues and the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball have been working in unison to unify the sports region, more so since the NFL's Rams left for Los Angeles in January.

"We have this wonderful relationship with the Blues," Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III said. "It's really a relationship and that relationship has continued to grow. ... Now the Winter Classic is really a culmination of a partnership that I know will continue to grow in the years to come.

"... I'd like to thank Commissioner Bettman for making this possible. We've been bugging him for a number of years in ways subtle and not so subtle. Now we finally have this event."

I have thought long and hard over the course of the summer about how I might improve this team to give it the depth it needs and bring it to a higher level. To achieve this, the vision of the coach and VP-Hockey Operations needs to be perfectly aligned with that of the organization. He must also have a say in the decisions that impact the team's performance. These conditions are not currently met.

Today, I am informing you of my decision to leave the Colorado Avalanche organization. Though it saddens me, I have put much thought about this decision in recent weeks and have come to be fully comfortable with it.

Sakic speaks.

Sakic said he was "definitely caught off-guard" by Roy's decision, so much that it took him a few seconds to comprehend that he was resigning. Sakic said Roy had been contemplating the decision for weeks but repeatedly denied that the two disagreed over personnel decisions or didn't get along.

"Patty was always involved," Sakic said on a conference call Thursday evening. "Especially early he was a big help to me. He was always involved. He was aware of all the decisions we were making. To be honest with you I think that's a question that you'll have to ask Patrick, but I know we talked about everything."

Looks like half the team is gone, including some big names. As to be expected. Arseneau is gone. Pierre-Zabotel is gone.

JP LaFontaine is back, though, so I am pretty alright.

Chris Crane is back! Sharks/Barracuda nonnies, he is definitely a depth guy, but a good one. We might lose him up to a callup to the AHL for a few weeks again, but he'll be back.

Also dear co-captain Gary Steffes! Here's hoping to two captains raising the cup together again!

We signed a guy nicknamed Chewy!

One of the sponsors gave a couple season tickets because they were moving down to Dallas.

There's a special player announcement Saturday! Free popcorn and buck sodas. I wonder what's going to happen? Are we getting someone big?

I also bought my partial season tickets today. My ticket rep was on vacation, hah.

Colton Parayko is graduating from college! Apparently, he kept on taking classes this past year, even as he was making his NHL debut. He just finished his final two classes this summer, the little overachiever.

Pens re-sign Cullen for one year at $1M. He made $800k last year. I have to think given his production last year, he could have gotten more money elsewhere, but I'm pleased that he decided to stay.

I play in a league w/ a guy who is friends with Cullen from his days with the Ducks. According to him, Cullen was planning to retire after last year. I assume that fact + the pay raise + his chemistry w/ the Pens all contributed to him signing in Pittsburgh and not looking for more money somewhere else. This will probably be his last year for sure.

Rumor is that Johnny Gaudreau has purchased his own insurance, so that he can play in the World Cup even though he doesn't have a contract yet, and also that he's informed the Flames that he will put a moratorium on negotiations once he arrives for World Cup camp until the end, so that he can concentrate on the World Cup. World Cup from campt to finish is Sept. 4 to Oct. 1 with the Flames first game Oct. 12.

I actually think the NHL said they'd cover insurance for unsigned RFAs - on Team NA, that's Gaudreau, Monahan, and Trouba.

If these rumors are true and Dallas really did sign Jiri Hudler, I'm definitely going to need some fic where he joins in with Faksa and Hemsky's Daddy thing they've got going on.

One of the players on my local junior team started a mental health initiative and it's kind of cool to see a player go beyond what the league mandates regarding mental health awareness.

I was watching the Dallas Stars snapchat this morning, and I'm almost 100% sure that they deleted a snap where Tyler Seguin skated toward Jamie Benn to do some sort of press thing. You could see his number and then he asked some kind of question and someone (Jamie, I think) answered him. I watched it about four times and then told someone about it and when I went back it was gone.

Did anyone else see it? Have I lost my mind? It's a possibility.

If Tyler's injury is mild enough they don't mind putting him on skates to take a few pre-season promo videos, that's surely a good sign, right?
