Re: Trope talk -hatesex

I'm surprised there isn't more of it. This is the perfect fandom for hatesex and rivalries and all kinds of darkness, but most of what I come across, outside of specific requests on sinbin, is friends-to-lovers or AUs with meetcutes where they have no reason to hate each other in the first place.

Maybe I'm wrong, that's just my impression.

There's some older Crosby/Giroux that might fit your requirements. I think that's the only place I've seen "they genuinely hate each other and that's unlikely to change," but it's been awhile since I looked at any so don't recall specifics.

I wonder if it's because everyone has their fans so, to use the previous anons example of Backes/Benn if you write them both as assholes you have pissed off both sets of fans. If you write cinnamon roll Benn and asshole Backes you are going to hear about Backes animal rescue.

I understand how it's annoying if your fave is made into the big bad asshole who's always being mean to poor sweet other guy, but if it's a mutual dislike where they both irritate each other equally... what's there to be upset about?

na

I think this fandom is touchy in general. Authors have gotten shit for writing established ships in too-difficult relationships, even when the story has a hopeful or happy ending. So I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that people avoid the trope for that reason.

I also think team loyalties come into play with authors as well, where maybe they don't want to write their fave as a huge asshole. And that's before considering that if their fave's popular, potential backlash. If he's not, 30% of all fic for him now features him as an asshole. Granted, pure hatesex isn't my trope. I just like it on the way to friends-->lovers.

I'd be fine with hatesex where both guys were equally assholish. One being an ass and one being a perfect cinnamon roll isn't really a dynamic I like in general, though. I have trouble seeing any of the guys who play in the NHL as a perfect cinnamon roll.

It's just not my bag, personally, in this fandom or any other. I don't care about the porn aspect, and I'm not into people having sex who hate each other unless there's interesting character/plot development to come out of it.
