She is terrible at this, though. These posts have said it better than I can, look at this shit

The Blueliners thing is soooo shady, too. Way to be obvious. That artist has more talent in her pinky than ngozi has in her whole body so of course she had to kneecap the competition. So embarrassing.

She is making six. figures. on something that is supposed to be her full time job. If I made that much money and couldn't offer a regular and timely product, I would be fired.

Hm.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
It's not a very high bar, to be fair. The Blueliners artist doesn't seem to draw a small child falling in love with a grown ass man for example.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
Eh, I think Bitty's character design says more about her taste than her talent. I never really got into CP, but its style appeals to me much, much more than what I've seen of Blueliners so far. But art is, like, The Most Subjective, so difference in mileage is to be expected.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
I gotta say nonny I must be blind because the art for Check Please and Blueliners looks kinda the same to me. Like if you told me the same artist drew them both I would believe you.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
They're in the same general 'family' of styles, but the polishing is different.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
The style is super similar but I think Check Please is more detailed

Well, now that the first page of Blueliners is out, I can officially say I'm not impressed by the art.

I didn't mind the art that much, but there was so much dialogue. Admittedly I am more used to physical comics these days and haven't read a webcomic in a few years, so it might just be a stylistic trend that I'm not used to but all that text was overwhelming. I might just revisit it in a couple of months if people say it's good. Could just be growing pains.

The layout is in a way I can't read it normally and have to open every picture in a seperate tab and I'm too annoyed about it to actually read it right now lol

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
It's very.... flat?

I'm withholding judgment on hockey accuracy so far. But yeah, not impressed by the art at all.

Based on the artist's earlier work I would have agreed that she was more talented, but I don't really feel like the comic features the stuff I like about her style. It would be hard to have the same level of detail in a comic, but I feel like it does not have the same charm.

I'm really excited for Blueliners!

Holy balls.

Also. Can someone explain what Blueliners is?? I'm old.

Sorry. I asked the wrong question. Can someone explain the Blueliners drama please?? I have only seen veiled references to it.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

Okay, as someone who has no intention of contributing to her Kickstarter or Patreon, some of these complaints are definite issues and some I'm kind of 'hm' about.

The shirts thing seemed to be an issue with the printing company. That happens. Same with the page missing from the book. However, she has no excuse not to keep people posted, especially since I'm sure backers would understand some of that is out of her control.

No one is forcing people to donate to Patreon. If people are dissatisfied with what they're getting, they can stop their monthly payment. She can't be fired from Patreon, but people can choose not to pay her so she is not making money from it. I don't know what backer perks there are, since I'm not a patron, but there do seem to be some.

The Kickstarter is for the second volume. You... need startup money to do that? To print books? I read through all of her Kickstarter info, and it's to buy books. It's not to fund the comic, it's to buy a book.

If people want to buy the book, that's their prerogative. Over a thousand people do, and it's their money. Hopefully they're aware of the entire situation before they spend, but that's about as far as I'm willing to go.

These links had me caught in a weird spiral of tumblr wank. People have really strong opinions about Check Please, huh? And all this "no one can ever criticise the content creator" lol, isn't criticism part of what being a published artist/author is about?

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
> isn't criticism part of what being a published artist/author is about?

Absolutely. And, even more, isn't it what fandom is about? I mean, good lord, fanfic is entirely premised on the original work "getting it wrong" (no matter how much we might love said original work). Shocking lack of self-awareness from the fannish space, IMO.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
I think the comic being indie, free, and kinda, sorta, not really adjacent to hockey RPF makes some people categorize it closer to a casual fanwork than a professional publication. Which is still kinda weird, since tbh, I don't think the criticisms of Check Please! (or YCMAL, fwiw) are harsher than what hobby fandom producers get when they have a large audience that they've disappointed. Probably less in some cases, honestly. Money just makes everything a little more complicated, because lord knows criticism really just means you're begrudging someone else's success.

the funny thing is that back when she didn't get any money from it (5k a month from patreon alone) the updated were more regular and the whole thing seemed more "professional" for it imo. I guess there's added pressure, but also 5k plus two very successful kickstarters

God, the people I've seen who are like "I wish people gave ME $160k for writing fic", are so - write a damn comic or novel and publish it, then.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
I think it's gotten to the wanky point of no return. There's something to be said for both sides probably, but between "no one can ever criticise the content creator" and criticisms that are more like personal attacks ("this other content creator has way more talent because her drawings aren't ~pedo", really?), it's hard to have a level discussion. Battle lines have been drawn pretty firmly.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
Too true, it's just messy. I'm not surprised a lot of authors/people have abandoned the fandom (from what I can tell from the sidelines lol)

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
NA I agree with almost all the criticisms of Ngozi/omgcp but I wish the ~pedo wankers would fuck off, especially on deke. It's such a fucking stupid thing to complain about when there's so much valid criticism to make.
