Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Lately the only fic ideas in my head involve players cheating on WAGs with teammates. But I'm not even sure *I* am comfortable with putting that on the internet, even archive-locked, and I know fandom's generally not fond of putting non-famous WAGs in fic, especially as anything other than poly-supportive angels. I'm not sure if I should just write it as drawer fic, post under a sock, or actively try to make my brain want ANYTHING else.

I have actually been kind of wanting this lately, too, which is super unlike me. I think I'd just make the wives/girlfriends fictional, though - I don't really like writing non-famous people anyway.

+1

Yeah, as a general rule, I'm more comfortable when IRL, non-famous family and friends are replaced by OCs when they play a significant role. But fics that don't go down that route get a scroll from me, not flames.

You make a good point. I don't mind writing non-famous people in some contexts (I imprinted on Brioux in this fandom, where the non-famous kids are half the point of the ship), but this is obviously a different kind of story.. But I could probably change the names of the WAGs at the very least, while still exploring infidelity/lying/internalized homophobia/etc. as themes. Hmm.

For what it's worth, I hope you do! I think those are topics that would be great to explore in fic, and I'm always disappointed and surprised that they're not more prevalent.

Seconded wholeheartedly.

Do what makes you comfortable, but I honestly don't think there'd be any significant backlash if you did decide to publish it under a sock. There's definitely been infidelity fics before (personally, I find the poly angels creepier) and a lot of "worse" kinks have been written since. The most noticeable outcome of those fics have been... more of that kink.

I would just use OFCs. You can still explore the tropes you want that way, and you lose the squick factor (to many) of using non-famous WAGs.
