#29 – Lay, Lie, or Laine?

Canes give a third in 2017 for Darling's rights. He is a UFA on 1 July so I guess they think they can do a deal with him before then. https://twitter.com/MSmithCanes/status/858099558718615553

My first instinct was a third rounder seems high, but I guess (haven't checked though) this is a bit earlier than when the picks for rights trades tend to start. Maybe that extra month or so is worth it.

Good if they can get him signed though.

Maybe they want to make sure it is sorted before they have to do their expansion draft protection list? If he says no, they can expose him, and maybe Vegas take him and they don't lose anyone. It's a possible plan B if they can't sign him.

SA And I checked and a third was what Buffalo paid for Vesey's rights last year, so maybe that is the going rate.

Pretty sure he'll be a UFA and won't count towards the expansion draft unless he signs somewhere.

AYRT - If not protected by the team that holds their rights Vegas can negotiate with UFAs between 17-20 June. If Vegas reach an agreement with the UFA he would then count as Vegas' selection from that team. Well, according to this article, anyway. http://sinbin.vegas/curious-role-ufas-expansion-draft/

I'm guessing the Canes think they can work things out with Darling anyway.

I wonder what that means for Ward/Lack. They are both signed for another year, and I don't see a team trading for either one.

I guess they'll hope Vegas takes whoever they expose of the two and if not and there's no trade partners they'll just have to buy out the contract. I really hope Ward is the one to go, but it'll probably be Lack.
