#29 – Lay, Lie, or Laine?

Why is Taylor Crosby an asshole in like 90% of the Sid/Geno fic in existence? I get that she's supposed to be sassy or whatever, but most authors' attempts at sibling banter just make her sound like a total jerk.

I feel like this happens really frequently with siblings and "friend" characters. Patrick Sharp usually comes across as a total asshole in fic, too, but it's supposed to be funny. Anna Galchenyuk, too. Mostly these family members or friends just do not behave like I would want my family members or friends to act. :\

True, but a lot of hockey players act pretty asshole-bickery with their teammate friends when we see them interact. Kesler on Between Two Zambonis, Getzlaf to everyone, "Morning boys, fuck you Geno." That may actually be how they roll.

Yeah, but that's different from the repeated harrassment about people's love lives that you get in fic. I'm sure there's locker room banter, but these guys are fundamentally all too busy to spend hours on this shit. And it still doesn't explain Superbrat Taylor Crosby.

She's a hockey player too. Maybe it's a long game to get in his head so she has an advantage in holiday shootouts.

Chucky seems pretty surly, too. Them bickering with some amount of sibling hostility is believable. Her acting as an authority on his love life that he, according to the narrative, is just too clueless to make his own decisions on is a DNW for me.

Because being rude, overbearing, and arrogant is the only way to be Strong, and every sister or female friend in fanfic must be a Strong Female Character to prove that the author still totes loves women.

Fandom's treatment of her in general is just bizarre, like they think showing that they aggressively care about her more than they do her brother makes them Good people. The super sassy characterization seems like it's trying really hard to show the author cares about her as a person/is trying to pretend she doesn't just exist in the fic as an accessory to her brother's story. It doesn't even match what (admittedly little) we've seen of her personality irl imo.

I think people who write her that way think its cool and imagine themselves in her place. She's super matchmaky because they would be.

On the subject of sibling characterization. Meme. I've been on a Nick Bjugstad/Kyle Rau kick this weekend. And is Chad Rau actually a dick? Or just fandom's chosen brother who should be a jerk, because obviously one of them must be
