The posts came from a long time member of those boards with sources within the Hawks organization, and they sounded like one of the few who knew what they were talking about. I also understood those two incidents to be stuff other than Madison, maybe that real murky rumor of a hit and run?

Thanks for the info. If the sources are right, that implies the Blackhawks knew what was going on and turned a blind eye as long as Kane kept producing. Depressingly, I wouldn't be surprised, but still...

I've heard that he paid at least one ex-girlfriend to make DV charges go away, but that was from a friend, not even the Internet.

Really? I was never into the Blackhawks and while I was aware K/T has the biggest presence on ao3, I didn't know Patrick Kane was so loved. I always figured Jonny was the more popular of the two of them given the things Kane had done even before this entire incident.

I don't think he was so loved in fandom, but he was definitely up there. It's also really easy to discount how important he is in the wider hockey world as the face of USA Hockey and stuff :/

Someone on twitter was claiming they'd heard worse about Toews but I didn't bother asking because I figured either they'd say or they just wanted people to ask.

Really? Were these tweets recent? It kind of surprises me. I'm not even fond of Toews but he always just seemed like a pretty strait-laced Canadian boy to me. The only rumours I've heard of him were just some people claiming to have seen him frequenting gay bars in Chicago a long time ago.

I'm not sure what "worse" would be for Toews at this point with all the rumors swirling around Kane. Hosts rape parties? Child molester? Actual serial killer?

Perhaps a good indicator of how a player's fandom popularity is how often they show up in fic. Not pairing fic, but just randomly. I've never liked Kane and don't read Kane/Toews, and yet he shows up all the time in the stories I do read. And a lot of times it is in a role that could have been played by practically any other player in the league or at least any other Blackhawk.

Why else would a fic have the one Blackhawk that Geno calls for advice on a romantic restaurant in Chicago be Kane? Or Kane being the guy who gives somebody some other advice on their love life, which I've seen a bunch of times in Sid/Geno, Jamie/Tyler (yeah, I know they played together during the lockout but Seguin has about a million bros to consult on any give life problem) and in other pairing fic.

In my experience, Toews doesn't pop up with nearly the same regularity and when he does it's generally not as random, like he and Sid became friends playing together on Team Canada.

I'm not criticizing the authors who put him in their non-BH fic, just saying they wouldn't have done it if they hadn't liked him at the time.

I think the best way to describe it is "Patrick Kane" was the most popular fandom creation. Because I came in through reading fic, and when I started trying to get to know the real guys better the actual Kane seemed pretty different than who I'd been reading about. But between the early media image presented and his appearance, fandom made up this sensitive but confident party boy character you could use in a lot of scenarios, including as a third party in other fic.

I stopped reading K/T fic a long time ago, but wow would I never have asked Fanon Kane for relationship advice.

The Blackhawks were very, very good at marketing. When people have a narrative in their head of what someone's like, they aren't usually going to work to put pieces together that suggest something different, even when the pieces are all there.

I always kind of thought Sid was the most popular player in fandom, just because he was kind of big before K/T really blew up, and a lot of Blackhawks fans seem fond of him. But that may be a mistaken/narrow view of fandom from my lane.

No, I agree with you. K/T was a more popular pairing, but while a lot of people outside the ship really disliked one of Kane or Toews, most of the people inside K/T seemed to be at least somewhat fond of Crosby.

OK! You're right, Hockey RPF fandom started when the Blackhawks won the Cup in 2010, my mistake.

I never cared about Sid. I didn't dislike him, I just didn't care either way about him, and the circles I ran in were similarly neutral-to-positive (when he came up at all). From a longevity standpoint you may well be right that cumulatively he is the most liked player in hockey fandom, but a fandom-wide active fondness for him was not my experience.

It also depends if you're averaging it with people who dislike him, though. Kane had a lot of partisans, but a lot of people who hated him. Crosby has a lot of partisans, but not very many people dislike him on a personal level.

If you go purely by character tags on AO3, it's Toews. Granted, a lot of Kane fic was deleted, but most of that would've also featured Toews, so I doubt their relative ratio changed much.

He is probably the most popular in general fandom as well, not just RPF.
