Re: Random Hockey Thread

No you don't owe them nice words, they acted really fucking shitty.

And yeah, sport1 of all sites gave me a glimpse into the weird history there (didn't get into hockey until a couple years ago), and yes it's really hard to believe that they were looking for a new owner when they made that announcement with five days left!
And I'm also clueless about why they wouldn't have sold to Red Bull if it would've netted them a profit? Maybe they wouldn't have liked a strong rival given that Red Bull obviously has money?
But otoh, what was the point of owning a second team themselves, then? Makes the theory that they really only ever wanted the arena once they realized the team wasn't profitable quite plausible.

ayrt

Yeah, on top of being shitty it's all just so weird that I'm this close to going full conspiracy theory believer~.

I really wonder what will happen with the Eisbären Berlin down the line, too. The fans I know are mostly like "pffft, it won't happen to us", but I wouldn't be so sure? A couple more bad seasons (that aren't even that bad, you don't know suffering, Berlin!!!) and let's talk then. Apparently AEG wants to invest in the infrastructure around the Mercedes Benz Arena, but it's not like you can't do different things with that arena either... I would not be surprised at all when they announce that they "don't see a profitable market in Germany" in a couple of years.

I just noticed all my weird grammar mistakes. Sorry... Don't talk and comment at the same time, kids.

Re: Fic discussion - said the joker to the thief

Well, to be fair, the author did use 'Brinksy' (is this his real nickname?) for 99% of the fic.

Re: Fic discussion - said the joker to the thief

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah but any time his real name was used it was Brindecat, and it was tagged that way. She just straight up doesn't know what his name is.

Re: Fic discussion - said the joker to the thief

That's the sad part :c.

Re: Random Hockey Thread

I don't know any Eisbaeren fans, and for their sakes, I'd hope that Berlin appearing to be maybe more of a sports city in general

(just my impression given that they have soccer, Alba and Eisbaeren and while soccer always is a stable presence and the worst thing to ever happen is relegation, probably, both Alba and Eisbaeren have had highs and are now a little bit more down to earth and still lots of support and fans)

would lead to the city chipping in if push came to shove, but with only five days notice - and I wouldn't put it past these owners to do the same shitty thing all over - it might be too little time anyways.

so... is someone gonna tell her?

Re: Random Hockey Thread

From: (Anonymous)
I've seen the argument that the Eisbären have "tradition" so they'd be less likely to suffer the same fate and I hope that's true.

Berlin has a handball team in the first league too btw (Füchse)! AND a succesful volleyball first league team (BR Volleys). I feel like they have to be successful at sports because they're the capital lol.

Hamburg used to be big in sports too, and not only football, which makes it a bit sadder because not only did they lose their hockey club, their first league handball club (HSV Handball) went bankrupt this year too and was dissolved. And apparently their women's volleyball team lost a sponsor and had to be relegated because of that (from the first league to the second league). (I know too much about German sports apparently, lol.)

It's all about money anyway, so I wish at least the people that had the money in this case would try to be decent people. Fingers crossed for Berlin in the long run now, they have my favourite team name after all (well, 2nd because I'm partial to my team). :D

da

I thought about it but I wouldn't want to leave a comment with just that and I haven't read the fic yet...

I'm imagining Domi having to try and ask a doctor about this, circumspectly, once he starts requiring sex energy instead of food at whatever age that happens for incubi. (Right after he's drafted, for maximum shitty adjustment purposes?) Only it's kind of a mess, because the doctor doesn't know about incubi and has no idea what he's talking about.

My spellingandgrammarmatter sock would. But it only exists in my dreams because I can't bring myself to actually create it.

Re: Random Hockey Thread

I hold the same hope for them, too.

I obviously know too little about German sports outside of those I care about, (yay for Berlin and oh damn, that really sucks for Hamburg sports, aside of my hate of HSV I really like the city, loved to see Grizzlys games there and teams going away/being relegated due to money issues always sucks :/ )

Fingers crossed for Eisbaeren for sure, and for there to never be "lol, five days" situation ever again.

(Their name is a great one for sure and my forever fave played for them a little while so I really root for them not getting shafted like the Freezers did, apart from obviously no team deserving to be treated that way to begin with :/ )

A very interesting history, and a sad one too - imagine what she would've done to the landscape of women's hockey if she hadn't retired at 18. Though I'm not surprised at how it all went down, or how there were all those rumors about her gender. "A girl? Being good at something? Must be a man in disguise!" I looked up some articles about her after reading this and the highest-ranked ones at google treated the rumors like they were worth something. Thanks, guys, great reporting. :/

Her stats are something else: of the Vics' 228 goals, she scored 150. Just...holy shit. Can you imagine? No wonder they only had 29 GA in all 46 games - she must have never given up the puck.

(The stats for the team are really interesting, actually. 46 games, 45 wins, 1 tie, 29 GA, 16 shutouts - so they allowed exactly 1 goal in for each of 29 games that they won by an average of 4 goals each time, had one 0-0 game, and 16 blowout shutout victories. If they were still around today I would be the most shameless bandwagon fan imaginable.)

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
I'll admit that's true. However, it's also possible for people to spread rumors that aren't true. I think the truth is probably somewhere inbetween, but honestly, I don't trust what people say online because all people suck and are 'problematic,' not just celebrities.

Re: Random Hockey Thread

From: (Anonymous)
Given how it all seemed to have gone down I'm not surprised she retired that early, and truly, it's just such a shame (as is obviously that even roughly a hundred years later, nothing has changed much especially when it comes to team sports...)

But more than anything I'm left with the feeling that for how outstanding an athlete she obviously was, it's a damn shame that instead of being remembered as one of the Greats in her sport, there isn't even a picture of her, that it's not known what became of her, that she just got forgotten by history like that. (And I say this as someone who wouldn't have known about her without that post).

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, people try to make things more complicated than they actually are. And I think that a lot of people here are charmed by the weirdness of his twitter account and hate that fact since on meme anything Hawks related=evil.

Re: Random Hockey Thread

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, it's really sad. I definitely would never have heard of her without this writeup, and it looks like other writeups treat her with a lot less respect and a lot more sensationalism.

Just because it's the off-season doesn't mean that news stops

Re: Random Hockey Thread

From: (Anonymous)
Thank you for linking this, I had never heard of her and wouldn't have seen this otherwise.

I feel really sorry for her basically being forced to quit. It's so typical. :( I hope she had a nice life and had fun with whatever she chose to do. It's really quite intriguing (and sad!) that we don't know what she looked like or what became of her. Like, 15 goals in one game! Jesus!!

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

I think a lot of the problem does tend to stem from the black-and-white view I've seen a lot of people hold on the Internet nowadays. Yeah, Toews can have shitty ideas about sexual assault and be doing coke and still be a pretty funny dude sometimes. People who hold ideas you disagree with aren't going to go around with that idea stamped on their forehead or be an evil strawman for you to hate all the time.

That being said, the weirdness of his feed makes me miss when Jonathan Quick used to tweet things because my overwhelming response to that was pure, unabashed joy. Here was this dude that generally didn't like attention talking about the rabbits that had been fucking in his backyard. It was truly a loss I grieved over at length.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
LOL, same. I understand the starring-out is a courtesy (or attempt to avoid backlash/wank) since tumblr fucked up its search and now it searches content as well as tags, but I wish anti-tags were more standardized. "Reminder that I don't like X" or "cw X" or whatever is not helpful! Just put the person's name followed by "for ts" or something!
