A very interesting history, and a sad one too - imagine what she would've done to the landscape of women's hockey if she hadn't retired at 18. Though I'm not surprised at how it all went down, or how there were all those rumors about her gender. "A girl? Being good at something? Must be a man in disguise!" I looked up some articles about her after reading this and the highest-ranked ones at google treated the rumors like they were worth something. Thanks, guys, great reporting. :/

Her stats are something else: of the Vics' 228 goals, she scored 150. Just...holy shit. Can you imagine? No wonder they only had 29 GA in all 46 games - she must have never given up the puck.

(The stats for the team are really interesting, actually. 46 games, 45 wins, 1 tie, 29 GA, 16 shutouts - so they allowed exactly 1 goal in for each of 29 games that they won by an average of 4 goals each time, had one 0-0 game, and 16 blowout shutout victories. If they were still around today I would be the most shameless bandwagon fan imaginable.)

Given how it all seemed to have gone down I'm not surprised she retired that early, and truly, it's just such a shame (as is obviously that even roughly a hundred years later, nothing has changed much especially when it comes to team sports...)

But more than anything I'm left with the feeling that for how outstanding an athlete she obviously was, it's a damn shame that instead of being remembered as one of the Greats in her sport, there isn't even a picture of her, that it's not known what became of her, that she just got forgotten by history like that. (And I say this as someone who wouldn't have known about her without that post).

Yeah, it's really sad. I definitely would never have heard of her without this writeup, and it looks like other writeups treat her with a lot less respect and a lot more sensationalism.

Thank you for linking this, I had never heard of her and wouldn't have seen this otherwise.

I feel really sorry for her basically being forced to quit. It's so typical. :( I hope she had a nice life and had fun with whatever she chose to do. It's really quite intriguing (and sad!) that we don't know what she looked like or what became of her. Like, 15 goals in one game! Jesus!!
