Yeah, "scrappy misfits" tends to mean in comparison to other teams as a whole. CBJ is scrappy misfits. A perennial contender with a long team pedigree, not so much.

(I'm torn on whether or not to call the Sharks scrappy misfits, since even their stars are all kind of weird outliers, but they aren't exactly a Cinderella team either.)

For some reason, this made me think Sweeney and Benning should start trading with each other. At least one of them would make a good trade every time.

Why not just give them both a few car tires, a burn barrel and some accelerant? It'd work the same.

There was an article where he talked about Murray getting the nod for backup goalie, which by all rights meant he was done in Pittsburgh. He talked about how Crosby came and talked to him about what an important member of the team he'd been and how much he was valued, and it was really sweet. He's probably done in Pittsburgh now, but what an amazing exit to have. <3

Where are you hanging out that they've been labelled as chokers? When I think of teams that have been stuck with the "choker" label I think of the Caps, Blues, and Sharks.

Probably a good thread leading up to the Combine/Draft/long summer of no hockey and looking into the future. Apparently Columbus might be trying to trade away 3rd? Discuss.

Also obviously they should have just chanted "Tiiiiiiishy, Tiiiiiiiishy"

Possibly my favorite hockey nickname. Second only to Kris Letang calling Sidney Crosby "Bing"

Whoa there, stop it with all that reasonableness! It's almost like sports culture isn't a monolith and multiple narratives can be created from the same set of facts with a little wishful thinking and some deft journalism!

I knoooow. It was such a great exit. I hope he finds someplace to be that will serve him well and that he'll enjoy.

Bolts breakdown day - Bishop says he "strained his shin and ankle area." I'm not sure exactly what that means, except OUCH.

Not to jump too far into this fray but I think maybe they've often been labeled as a team who can't get up even when everything is on the line and sometimes lags a stjnker despite the importance of the moment. Maybe that's not your definition of choking and maybe they didn't say those words but I think often in the Pittsburgh media the implication has been there.

I agree. The only reason the Pens are even labeled as "underachievers" at all is because the expectation is super high ('Cup or bust') and that's a testament to how high the talent level is perceived to be.

Good god so many spelling errors. Don't meme on mobile people you'll forget to proofread.

They've lost two 3-1 series leads and lost to a lower seeded team every year except last year in the last seven years. They were big favorites in 2012 where they had a meltdown in the first round against the Flyers, and in 2013, where they did make it to the ECF but got swept. I'd frankly be shocked if no one had ever thought to label them chokers.

Oh ouch :( I also have no idea what that means but it sounds like something he'll be able to recover from, which is good. I was worried.

This honestly makes me wonder if the weird grammar is a Wisconsin thing, because I grew up there and occasionally have the same issue when talking to people from elsewhere. Alternately, it's quite possible that I, like Kessel, am an awkward panda who's bad at talking to large groups of people.

And I grew up in Minnesota and he sounds like every boy I went to high school with - I'm not even sure what he says that's weird grammar.

*am worried now that I have similar weird grammatical habits and I've just never known*

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that makes sense. It's just not something I've really seen, so I was a bit confused. I think I also just have trouble thinking of any team with multiple cups as chokers, unless we're talking about the Leafs. Or the Oilers, who are less chokers and more... the Oilers.

Yeah, maybe? IDK. His father is apparently just the same - they're apparently very similar in terms of athletic ability and personality. I think a lot of people have the grammar they grew up hearing and the grammar they use in more formal settings, and he sounds like he has problems switching a bit (or doesn't care to switch) between them.

But I also think this is something I'm more sensitive to, since I code switch a whole whole lot, and so am perhaps projecting my experience onto him.

And I'm not midwestern at all, so that might be it. (My area's accent is so localized that I can tell if someone is from the next county over, so like, again, I think I'm primed to hear these things.)

lol Brendan Shanahan took it seriously enough to trade him, judging by his comments after the trade.

Toronto got hosed in that deal and they didn't have to. They made that situation happen because they made it very clear Kessel needed to go. They turned him into an effigy of all the terrible decisions of the last regime and then burned it for Pittsburgh's benefit.

Their hands were tied somewhat by Kessel NTC. Maybe the badmouthing afterwards was PR damage control for trading away their best player? But even if it was all just lipservice to appease disgruntled masses, it seems pretty clear that it was unfair to him as a player and a person.

And don't forget how they didn't do a tribute video for him when he came back because "we don't do those anymore," but then I think they did for some other returning ex-Leaf later in the year.
