Re: SCF Predictions Thread

You are reminding me of a MvW discussion about how Sid makes a much better heel than face.

Maybe as fans we should just come to terms with the fact that we are obviously the heel going into this cup final. It's the Sharks first ever final. Pens have three cups.

That's fair. The original comment was pretty annoying.

Even the people who hate them and call them evil are exaggerating for comic effect.

I would like to believe you, but some of the Pens haters on meme are really fucking aggressive about it. I don't think they're all doing it for comic effect.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

AYRT I think that's probably it. I'm a fan of a team with zero cups, so that doesn't give you much of a comeback when people whip out the choker label. The fact that there's any sort of narrative around the Pens core being chokers when they've won a cup not that terribly long ago seems pretty ridiculous in general, but so does the majority of the narrative out there about any team.

What?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
You have a point. This one sticks in my craw because it's set in the latest season where 1) one team swept the season series against the other 2) guess which team lost in the fic? and 3) it's my team. This is contributing to me reading less fic for my team, which I will have to deal with.

Okay, maybe there's a fourth reason: 4) name dropping the opposing team which leads to 1) & 2) where I will definitely pettily go "East Coast Bias"

You're right, I didn't word that the best way. "Even the people who call them evil are exaggerating for comic effect" would have been better, without the "hate them" - of course people genuinely hate your team, and I'm sorry that they're nasty about it. But I don't think that's necessarily the same as thinking they're evil.

tardy to the party but I just read the first two and I agree with everyone else that she's getting a lot of college hockey details wrong. I also don't like how she has all this canon on her tumblr (I assume) to the point that it makes reading the actual fic somewhat confusing at points. I found the writing kind of bad in general. Her other fic had issues but was pretty good and readable, this seems very different in tone/style from her other stuff and I'm not a fan. Will I keep reading anyways? Maybe.

I gripe about the Pens a lot and find them annoying, but I would never think they're evil, or even hate them on the level I do other teams that have actually done stuff I find deplorable. Any complaining I do on meme about the Pens is just blowing off steam in a fandom where the Pens are kind of inescapable.

It's probably a matter of finally being in hockey long enough to notice, but wow I am really noticing this postseason how flatout absurd most of the narratives are.

The one where any given goal scorer who fails to score goals does it because he's "not a playoffs guy" (or worse, because he "doesn't want it enough") is the one that really comes to mind. Adam Gretz had a great cranky article about how goal scoring is always going to be streaky because of the low number of goals scored in general.

I feel like if the hockey media and fans could wrap their heads around the idea of small sample sizes (and by extension, luck), a lot of stupidity could go away. Although that's probably too optimistic on my part!

So PEB is repping France. Dang. I did not know how much I wanted both Roussel and PEB on that team until now.

It's probably partially a marketing thing to get a top prospect playing and he'll probably be a Leaf too so that will help sell a few more tickets to those games as it's in Toronto (if they're not sold out already at least). Considering all that I probably would have not chosen JT Miller if I were them and put Galchenyuk in that spot from the start, but I guess that's the benefit of hindsight.

I believe they were saying they find him more likable (as a character) when he is positioned as the antagonist. It was in the context of one of the 24/7 series.

I don't like the Penguins, but I love them as the heel--they're just uninteresting and obnoxious to me as the face. I'd rather evil empire my way to a Cup, though, instead of #lumbus-ing it.

Aaron Ekblad talked to hometown students.

Highlights: He's planning on working towards a business degree from Harvard online. Was going to take a course this year but couldn't because the exam period was over a back to back game.

On the WCH One of the Americans he’s looking forward to teaming up with is Detroit Red Wings’ forward Dylan Larkin.

“Larkin and I have been friends since we played together at the All-Star Game in Nashville (in January),” Ekblad said.

Re: Fandom Venting

It just seems unnecessary to me most of the time. It's not hard to look up scores, and you can usually find something that fits whatever narrative.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

From: (Anonymous)
In my ideal world, fans and the media would both understand the effect of small sample size. Sadly, this is not my ideal world.

It's wrestling terminology. "Heels" are bad guys and "Faces" are good guys. Faces, because they are usually the prettier wrestlers and heels, because that's a common (albeit old-fashioned) slang term in English for the lowest of the low.

I was just gonna come in here with an angry comment about them having Mathews on this roster and not Chucky, but I see deke has my back. Chucky scored 30 goals this season, and that kid hasn't even been drafted yet. What a crock!

Re: Fandom Venting

+1

I don't need to read about a blowout loss to the Caps or Pens when we didn't have any while we sure as hell lost badly to other teams.

A tweet from Vlasic:

In recognition of the Blues having a great season, I donated 2500$ to the David and Kelly Backes charity @A4A_org #donateifyoucan

Well, I was already planning to root for the Sharks, but as a Blues fan this has me 500% more on board.

Some of the Pens fans are pretty fucking aggressive in a much less tongue-in-cheek way, both in their pro-Pens and anti-Other-Teams opinions.

(And as an avowed Pens hater, I both passionately despise the team and every single player on it, some for reasons and some for Reasons, and use exaggerated language for comic effect when talking about the team. I'm a rational person who knows objectively that the Pens are just like every other team in the league. But also slime monsters from the deep whose success is the worst thing to happen to this planet since global warming and the series finale of Battlestar Galactica. Cue lots of bloody pictures of leopard seals eating penguins, because those make my heart feel light.)

You realize that you're not better than the homer Pens fans you hate, right? Possibly worse, or at least more serial killer-y, what with the enjoyment of animal death.

I read a very entertaining comment the other day speculating that the Sharks logo is secretly a drawing of a Shark attacking and eating the Penguins logo, because they both have a triangle and a hockey stick.

I am an avowed serial killer as well, of course. That was clearly implied.
