Thoughts, opinions? I know I should know better than to get invested again after the Vinny fiasco and the prolonged torture that is Jake/David, but I kinda want to know where this goes.

That seems like a common problem in hockey rpf adjacent fic.

It seems like one of the characters wasn't recruited for a D1 hockey school, just applied because he wasn't drafted.

That's... that's now how that works. A lot of this is ringing inaccuracy alarms for me, and it doesn't help that BU is actually my school.

Besides (or maybe because of?) the poor research, the writing itself seems really sub-par, too. It's a mess.

I didn't go to BU but I'm from Massachusetts and same. Once the college part started, it was like "this isn't right." And if more of it is taking place at BU...

She's also had issues with how the USNTDP works before.

But you're right, the writing felt more messy than, say, Marc and Dan.

Ugh, I can't believe I relapsed for this. I agree, the writing is really... off. I even checked her tumblr because that's usually where she hides the good shit, and I can't buy into it. The tone, setting, characters just don't click (which is a problem I run into with a lot of college AUs, tbh, on account of currently attending a Hockey School and running pretty parallel to The Hockey Crowd). Playing college hockey takes more planning and dedication than this shows, Robbie probably would've marinated for in Juniors for a bit longer (unless the author is introducing yet another player who undersells himself), she doesn't write bro culture very believably...

I caught up with David, too, and while I can confirm that her writing is better in large chunks, I'm also pretty Over It. Why did he decide he needs to dedicate his life to a team sport if he can't attach to or trust the vast majority of his teammates ever? How hasn't this been a major red flag against him? Why does anyone want to be friends with ~~Bella Swan~~ David Chapman anyway?

... at least it's easy to quit this time around?

I'm not necessarily trying to defend her, but it's hard to figure out how the college hockey recruiting process works for someone who isn't a Jack Eichel. I tried to research it once for a fic idea and closed out my browser confused as hell. For a really minor plot point, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.

(And I don't know if it works this way for hockey, but I know college football teams have tryouts for walk-ons who weren't recruited. A successful NFL player who graduated from my school two years before I did tried out for the football team his sophomore year...obviously that was a decision that worked out well for him.)

College hockey tends to not have open tryouts, at the D1 level - even walk-ons are recruited. When BU brought in players mid-season this year, they were recruited. It's not like football or even basketball, where you have walk-ons for practice.

I mean, I imagine it's a lot like NHL teams wooing free agents. Every video I've seen has had players saying they had a few teams in mind, some of them were interested, coaches/recruitment contacted them, they visited campuses, then signed their letter of intent, repeat.

I have it open in a tab, but haven't read it yet because of the same reasons basically. I'm still super annoyed about Vinny (which was my favourite story of hers, shame on me I guess) and I'm holding of on reading any David until it ends (although I used to love it ugh).

I'm following her tumblr and the million names and characters she mentions make following her stories seem like kind of a drag? Idk...

I just hope this pairing is actually endgame. The past few arcs of hers haven't been very satisfying in that regard, and I'm sick of reading 50 chapters (sorry, not chapters, separate fics) about two guys who don't even end up together.

lol I have the same "problem" with her fic. I'm sorry, but teasing it for months and then not resolving anything is not something I particularly like.

The fact that she posts it as separate fics drives me up the fucking wall.

tardy to the party but I just read the first two and I agree with everyone else that she's getting a lot of college hockey details wrong. I also don't like how she has all this canon on her tumblr (I assume) to the point that it makes reading the actual fic somewhat confusing at points. I found the writing kind of bad in general. Her other fic had issues but was pretty good and readable, this seems very different in tone/style from her other stuff and I'm not a fan. Will I keep reading anyways? Maybe.

Like... I'm not convinced she knows USNTDP has a team, it's not just a "Development Camp."

I actually checked her tumblr to see what was going on over there because I know she talks to readers a lot and yeah. I get the impression that she knows next nothing about Boston, BU, college hockey, etc. I don't get why she's writing this story when she's clearly totally unfamiliar with the setting.

Jake could not have gone to the OHL at 16 and been on the USNTDP. Unless she doesn't realize, yep.

A Canadian would not know jack about American development /jokes //or am I???
