ayrt

You won me over with the idea of a truce when you reminded me how good looking Roman Josi is, because damn son.

Yeah, I've been rereading old stuff from my bookmarks, too. The Suck Fairy has visited some of it (like I'm a lot pickier about how Geno's written now, and some of the dialogue in early Sid/Geno is unreadable to me), but there's a whole lot in there I loved and have enjoyed revisiting.

I've even read some of the things that I didn't like well enough to bookmark the first time, only to go yep, there was a reason I didn't bookmark this before!

lol that happens to me quite a lot when I'm rereading. I'm like "why did I bookmark so few x/y fics?!" and then go to the tag, read them and remember.

Re: Fandom Venting

Did the fandom always have problems with non-endings? I feel like it did, but I don't want to take the time to go back and see.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I haven't noticed that as a problem with the older stuff I've been reading, but a) I've mostly been reading the good stuff, so not a representative sample, and b) I've tended more towards the high concept stuff with an actual plot or a clear emotional arc, and those are probably easier to write endings for.

Going off my extremely shaky memory, though, I don't feel like I've ever run across the non-ending issue as much with Sid/Geno as with other pairings I've read. Like maybe it's not a habit Sid/Geno people picked up on as much? Or it could just be that I don't remember, which is also very possible.

Players who have joined the concussion lawsuit say they're getting frozen out by the alumni association:

I feel like I have read another article on this topic, but I can't remember if we talked it. Just, that's awful and yet completely unsurprising. Ugh. :(

Re: Fandom Venting

I don't know if it always plagued this fandom, but I definitely feel like this isn't the only one right now. In general there tends to be this trend towards happy fic which lacks conflict and then the authors don't know how to resolve what's basically nothing so it just ends. Like, at least I've come across this in mcu and sw fic, too.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, that makes sense re: sample and perhaps pairing-specific quirks. Like, I don't think the pairing has as much of 'broning' as a trope, which is rapidly becoming my least favorite thing in hockey fic. It's like two dudes punching each other in the arm and then making out, which, for whatever reason is really starting to grate, like, give me emotional arc and vulnerability and show me why they're friends/in love. FWIW, I really liked the Shattenkirk/Tarasenko fic for this reason.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I don't think it's the pairing or the trope, tbh. K/T fic was et up with broning back when I used to read it, but it also benefitted from the same influx of migratory slash fan (semi-)BNFs and decent-to-good writers that S/G had, and even the fics where the vast majority of the point was punching and making out managed to also have some kind of relationship progression and a conflict that got resolved.

Re: Fandom Venting

da

Actually I was going to say I remembered non-endings being a lot more of a problem with K/T than with S/G, but maybe it was a more recent development?

Re: Bangs, fests, exchanges etc - Pens Rarepair Fest

From: (Anonymous)
not sure if i'm surprised or not by the lack of Paul Martin/James Neal. They were pretty popular in their day, but also don't really feel like a Pens ship since they've both been traded. I am a little sad though, I did like them quite a bit and would have liked to read something new for them.

Re: Bangs, fests, exchanges etc - Pens Rarepair Fest

From: (Anonymous)
I noticed that, too, and found it interesting. At this point Neal has been gone just long enough that with fan turnover, a lot of the new or recent Pens fans have no feelings about him. Kind of like I have no feelings about Jordan Staal, because he was gone by the time I got here.

Re: Bangs, fests, exchanges etc - Pens Rarepair Fest

na

To be honest, I didn't think Paul Martin/James Neal would be valid in this fest otherwise I would have requested a lot more. I thought it had to be one Penguins player currently on the team in the pairing.

Re: Bangs, fests, exchanges etc - Pens Rarepair Fest

DA No, that wasn't required.

Re: Bangs, fests, exchanges etc - M/M Rares

Sign-ups are officially open, in case anyone was thinking about signing up! There are 29 Hockey RPF pairings nominated + 3 crossover pairings (Sidney Crosby/Aaron Rodgers, Claude Giroux/Olivier Giroud, and Andrew Ference/Tomáš Rosický).

Re: What's Up With Your Team - Third Round and Counting

From: (Anonymous)
So given that DeBoer's Sharks are in the SCF and McLellen didn't seem to make much difference in Edmonton so far (even in underlying numbers, like possession stats), is there any discussion of how maybe McLellen was part of the Sharks' problem? I feel like at the time people thought he was a good coach, but.

Re: Random Hockey Thread - Crossovers

From: (Anonymous)
Putting this here because it's a bit Venting, a bit Fic You Want (but not player specific like the existing thread).

So, I'm going through the Generation Kill tag looking for things to read until some hockey WIPs are done, and I find a GK/hockey crossover--OMGYAY!!!!---but then it has characters I hate and is really tiny short--FUCKING...BOOOOO!!! Man, that's so frustrating. Why did it have to be those particular Hawks players? Fuck me. /vent

It reminded me how I would give up a tooth for a good long plotty hockey crossover with another fandom I also love. Generation Kill would be amazing, but I'd also take something like Person of Interest, Justified, Leverage, Teen Wolf (but not one that makes Derek a human figure skater ffs), Bond/Bourne/anything to do with spies, or basically anything that's action oriented and has nothing to do with coffee or college students. Or the Hell's Kitchen portion of the MCU--Luke Cage should totally have taken up hockey, think about it. Jessica Jones investigating something involving the NHL would be incredibly entertaining. Matt Murdock dating/having a one night stand with a player who is taken aback that a lawyer has more scars and bruises than he does.

Oh and more crossovers with other RPF would be awesome. That one where Jeff Carter fucks that pop star and neither knows that the other is famous is gold. More like that, please fandom?

So yeah, this fandom could use more crossovers. If I could write fic, I'd probably write nothing but crossovers and it'd become annoying to everyone checking the tag. LOL *shrug emoticon*

Re: Random Hockey Thread - Crossovers

From: (Anonymous)
I love hockey/sports crossovers/AUs. I write so many that I never post because they're so self-indulgent and I rarely finish them, lol. I've probably written one for every fandom I was in (but like I said posted 0, sorry!), hockey and football (the soccer kind) are definitely my favourite for that. I do wish more people wrote those!

Re: Random Hockey Thread - Crossovers

From: (Anonymous)
Wasn't "that pop star" Harry Styles? /comically missing the point

Re: Random Hockey Thread - Crossovers

From: (Anonymous)
I want to read all the crossovers with other sports! (Please post any that you finish because I would eat them up.) NGL, I really want to write Beau Bennett fic that pairs him with my favorite failed major league baseball player, and has them learning what life beyond pro-sports is like through the power of love or whatever, but I can't seem to make myself start it.

Re: Random Hockey Thread - Crossovers

From: (Anonymous)
That sounds like something I'd read! I always like that angle, that they're having a hard time and then help or accept each other.

I've always wanted to write a proper fic about two athletes of different sports in a relationship coming out and then dealing with how differently teammates, media and so on react to each of them.

Have you read the story where Geno buys Mikey Way off Craigslist? http://archiveofourown.org/works/1533791

Nonnie. NONNIE. Please write that fic, I need it in my life.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

I just do not care about Paul Martin. I recognize that he was a good player for us, and I'm glad he's doing well elsewhere, but I have no feels.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
I'm the exact same. He was a good player and a good partner for Letang, seems like a good enough dude, but that's about it.

The biggest reason I started turning on him started with the Minnesota Sunshine crap and the insistent portrayal of him as this sweet, kind "Minnesota nice" (barf) team mom that stays home and knits, and it's just such a boring archetype. It also doesn't fit actual Paul Martin, who everyone in Pittsburgh knows was a huge partier and playboy.

Good teammate, nice guy, fine hockey player, but I'm more than happy to have a younger, cheaper and IMO better version of him in Brian Dumoulin.
