Like I KNOW it's sad Dupuis has had to retire due to injury, but he already won a Cup with the team so I don't really care. Sorry.

I was with you until this part. Of all the many things to complain about re: Pens fans... Dupuis? He had a Players Tribune article come out just this morning about realizing that his teammates were worried he was going to die, of course people are gonna talk and feel sad about it.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the article by Dupuis yet, but the article Cullen did is pretty adorable: His kids offer commentary and analysis, and Kessel apparently asks about their opinions every morning. ("When I get to the rink, Phil Kessel is always asking me, “What are the boys saying? What’s the analysis?”

I’ll tell him all about their scouting report and he’ll just be dying laughing. He gets such a kick out of it.")

Also, Trevor Daley's kid looks just like him.

a ayrt rt

*eyeroll* please, talk more about how adorable the Pens are on my venting thread about how I'm sick of hearing about the Pens

I was responding to the anon you're referring to, not you, bud. Calm down.

It was still a reply to my thread so I clicked it. Maybe talk about stuff in the hockey articles thread?

Just a few days ago, someone vented about how they were sick of hearing about the Sharks and the attitude of Sharks fans on twitter, and a Sharks fan commented about how actually Sharks fans are ~funny and ~cynical while other fanbases are whiny and complain too much about calls and injuries (which lol of course the Sharks don't have any, so). Don't recall any complaining then. That's the nature of a public, communal forum.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the comment was topical? Please feel free to complain about fatalistic Sharks fans (I can see how that's annoying from the outside).

Aww, I love Cullen. Kinda mad he wasn't that good for us, but what can you do.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I always wondered how players dealt with school for their kids on one year deals.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of want fic now, except I don't really want fic about anyone's actual kids. I guess I want trade fic with fictional kids? IDK. But the logistics sound interesting.

DA
I feel like Marycontraire's Brioux fic best fits this, from what I've seen in fandom, though she def. used Briere's RL kids as characters. Still, the fic where they're in Germany is probably most what you're looking for.

istg my TL is crying about Dupuis on any given day, though. There doesn't even have to be a new article.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, he has a cup already, so nothing that happens to him is sad. /s

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it's not so much that he already has a Cup but that Pens fans insist on acting like his injury is the saddest thing to happen to any human being/hockey player/team. He's 37, he was going to retire soon anyways, and there's a significant list of players who had to retire younger because of injuries or health issues. It's sad, I'm sad for him, but I'm tired of it being brought up all the time as the greatest tragedy of all time or something uniquely terrible that the Pens org is suffering through when "aging player gets injury and has to retire" is actually pretty fucking common.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. He's not Paul Kariya, who is a genuinely sad story. It feels like more of the "Pens are cursed, woe!" tragedy storyline I get so tired of.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think we have to grade people's personal tragedies. Both Kariya and Dupuis were done early due to injuries, and it's sad. Dupuis was very popular both with players and fans, so people are emotionally affected by his story. (And I have several Kariya fans on my timeline who get emotional every time a Kariya story comes out, too.) Maybe consider getting a Twitter client that lets you mute his name?

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
da

Dupuis isn't "done early", though. He's well into reasonable retirement age.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
But the cause of his retirement had nothing to do with his age. He's extremely fit, but will be on blood thinners for the rest of his life.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, the ~tragedy clearly gets exaggerated because he's a fandom fav.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that Pens fans are not having the same depth of feeling about players not on their team is... normal? It's not a commentary on the relative degrees of tragedy experienced by different people.

"I'm sadder about this player than this other player" =/= "This situation is objectively more sad than this other situation." It's a difference in investment. And if you can't deal with people being more invested in players on their own team than in players on other people's teams, I really don't know what to tell you expect maybe you should stay out of multi-team spaces.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh boy. When did I say I "can't deal"? I find it annoying, but there's plenty of things in this world that I find annoying and so far I haven't moved to a solitary cave in the middle of the desert.

I understand that Pens fans find it especially sad because he's on their team, but I can't lie and say I don't also get a sense that they DO think this is sadder than any other situation. They bring it up all the time as a reason why they should win the cup this year. It's a very, very common situation, and while I understand being a little torn up about it happening to a fan fave on your team, I find it hard to think of it as something which makes the Pens especially ~unique or tragic. And that's HEAVILY implied by pens fans, all the time.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I get the feeling that this is more the result of your perception of Pens fans than about Dupuis and how people actually talk about him. And while "retiring because old and injured" is extremely common, the way in which it happened to Dupuis is not "very, very common" by any means.

Re: Fandom Venting

It's a venting thread. People are allowed to vent without a disclaimer about how the thing annoying them is human nature and there's nothing wrong with it and they probably don't belong in multiteam spaces if they find themselves annoyed at it overwhelming their TL. If you can't handle that ... you probably know how the rest goes.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
When someone comes to the venting thread and says "I'm annoyed by people doing X," does that not imply those people shouldn't do X? Or have I been reading this thread all this time?
