Okay, first of all, this is about 60% porn. (Porn which I enjoyed, wow. Great. A+.) Actually, maybe it's more than that.

This is a 30k fic.

Two, damn, Rich Clune gets a lot of action in this. Also, damn, surprise feelings.

Three, the Shea Weber pairing was genuinely surprising (and hot, so hot).

Four, there are a couple POV shifts and I usually don't go for that, but it works, everything works.

Meme, this is a gem. Secondly, the sex tape is not who'd you think it'd be of, judging by the tags and the summary.

I am great. Side note: James Neal is hilarious in this, and I also dig it.

I scrolled to the end and was completely unsurprised (and meh) about the endgame, but as a super long piece of crack I thought it was pretty good. I laughed a lot and enjoyed the Swedes particularly.

I enjoyed it too, it was a lot of fun.

I expected another angsty fic involving sextapes from this fandom and instead, this is a sex comedy! I am overjoyed.

I fucking loved this. I giggled throughout the whole thing, but especially the Neal POV section. It was glorious.

And I definitely was thinking the Shea Weber pairing was completely different and feeling smug about it, tbh, until I realized I was wrong. Still great.

That fic was awful and I strongly regret clicking on it in the first place, much less reading it through to the end.

Three days later and I'm still thinking about this stupid fucking fic, way more than any other bad but otherwise inoffensive fic deserves. Probably because it's so perfectly, exactly tailored to my dislikes and pet peeves and so disruptive of my fic expectations that it ended up feeling weirdly calculated and personal, like it's being bad at me. Maybe next time I will remember that you shouldn't disregard poor SPAG in the summary no matter how minor it seems or how much you like the tropes purportedly on offer.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with the SPAG in the summary?

Re: Fic discussion - long, long way back to nashville

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
They need to "breach" the subject. Maybe I'm being over generous with the term SPAG and it's not so much a technicality as the author just not knowing how to words good?

Nonny, I am sorry, but the fic is not a personal affront to you.

Also, poor SPAG? How? All I see is is that ellipses thing, which should be properly spaced. Is that what you mean?

I figured out who it was with the initials, but I was kind of thinking it might be a red herring until it was confirmed.

The length probably was a bit much, like I did get that "there's still half the story to go?" feeling when I looked at the scroll bar position. But it wasn't unenjoyable for me. It's just most comedy/crack fics don't go on that long, so even knowing the length ahead of time I don't know if I was ready for it.

My suspension of disbelief broke about... a fourth of the way in?* and then gave up, which I wasn't super surprised by since I Hate Jokes (or at least sitcom jokes, which this reminded me of).

*Spoiler version, I gave up exactly when they (including Dicky, who probably should have been in Milwaukee) told Weber about the tape and he said that he thought no one would see the tape, so either A) Mysterious Boyfriend uploaded without permission and the proper response isn't blushing or B) they're literally too stupid to be alive.

IAWTC, especially the sitcom jokes and too stupid to be alive.

Re: Fic discussion - long, long way back to nashville

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
The illogical sex tape stuff was a big part of why I couldn't get into the fic. Like, the dude who uploaded it is not a bad person, so it's obviously not about revenge porn or extortion or anything like that, and his bf didn't know about it so it's not about riskily indulging his/their (totally out of the blue and plot-convenient) voyeurism kink, and they're both painted as super private and closeted so putting a sex tape on the internet is the last thing either of them should ever think to do, and the dude who didn't agree to it doesn't seem to be in the least mad about the violation. So the only option is that one or both of them are dumb as bricks.

And, as a more minor but still important consideration, you have to wonder how it was found in the first place, since the dude who found it had never thought about dudes sexually before in his life and was looking for hot ladies in his porn search. I don't think even google has the capability to deliver you the gay fingering porn, conveniently featuring your teammate you have an unexamined crush on and based on your unrelated sex dreams, that you never once in your life considered you might want.

Re: Fic discussion - long, long way back to nashville

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly! Like, if the video was so poorly hidden that a guy found it while looking for some vanilla, straight fingering porn, it would have taken 0.002 seconds for someone outside the team to stumble onto that video and recognize Shea. Let alone however long it took for Roman to find it and get around to telling people.

Completely unrelated to the fic at hand, but apparently Bing can predict with 6-32% accuracy if you have cancer - whether or not you know it yourself - just based on you googling your symptoms!

Yeah.

Also, I heard a story the other day that Target can tell when someone in your household is pregnant based on your purchases, and then they sent over a coupon for diapers, and then the father got mad before his daughter told him.

Re: Fic discussion - long, long way back to nashville

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That Bing statistic is interesting, considering most people I know use it solely for porn searches.

But yeah, ad companies and search engines do a lot of tracking across social media these days, and can sometimes be pretty accurate in gathering data about you. For example, google's ad preferences (if you have them turned on) will make a guess about your age/gender and interests:

http://www.google.com/ads/preferences

So now my head-canon is that google/bing figured out Josi was gay before he did, and it's hilarious.

I'm a sucker for surprise feelings, so I read the rest of the fic in hope of a resolution (with more than half to go I was feeling pretty optimistic), but then it was just all about Weber's situation + the video tape.

It was a bit ridiculous at times, but the sex and feelings where all there so it's definitely worth a read again.

Re: Fic discussion - long, long way back to nashville

(Anonymous) 2016-06-13 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, I didn't mean to mislead. (The surprise feelings were mine, for Rich Clune. I didn't know my depth of fondness for him had lasted.)

people are taking this fic way too seriously. i'm usually all for realism too, but come on, meme. this is cracky porn from start to end, with some feelings thrown in. if you don't like crack that's fine, but don't go overanalysing the plot, that's ridiculous.

Re: Fic discussion - long, long way back to nashville

(Anonymous) 2016-06-13 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
If the last week has proven anything, many thousands of words do not make people more generous with the plot, even if it's ~just crack.

Re: Fic discussion - long, long way back to nashville

(Anonymous) 2016-06-13 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What makes you think this is crack? I like crack, but this struck me less as crack and more as an author trying to provide a plot reason for what would otherwise be a long series of PWPs.

da

Because everyone's gay/bi/questioning at the drop of a hat, and the emotional responses of most of the characters are ridiculous? This James Neal is a walking crack dispenser all by himself.

NA - I have a hard time defining anything as crack fic that isn't, like, "they're all chipmunks" or "Gary bettman brings his secret experience as a producer behind MTV's Singled Out to bear in his negotiations with the NHLPA". I'd put this more in the realm of tropey goodness (or tropey badness, YMMV) which fits pretty snugly with "reason to string together a bunch of porn"
