da

this reminded me that giroux also is sometimes (unfortunately) called "g baby." so if There Can Only be One, i guess we at least have a backup plan.

Ahahaha omg. Watch someone get mad though because they got ~confused that you were talking about Malkin's baby and shipping him with Crosby or Simmonds or whoever.

This flat memer thought for a second that you were replying to the comment with Nicky Backstrom with Baby Nicky. There are only ten names and five nicknames in all of hockey.

Re: Fandom Venting

I guess that's good if you're a journeyman player. You don't have to learn new names, just reassign them to new faces. :p If nothing else, just call out "Brandon!" and one of your teammates is bound to respond.

Re: Fandom Venting

I immediately thought of a team to which this doesn't apply, which then makes me want to find out which first name appears on the most team rosters.

Re: Fandom Venting

I think someone's done that before. I think Matt and Ryan were the most frequent offenders?

... @Strome parents.

Found it. Thanks for remembering the most useless facts as always, brain.

Re: Fandom Venting

I think the reason for Matt and Ryan being two of the most frequently seen names is that those names were extremely popular in Canada (at least, my neck of the woods in Canada) in the early 90s. Like, my tiny elementary school class had two Ryans (and FIVE Michaels, but that's besides the point here).

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
In the United States, also. Matthew was ranked #3 or #2 every year from 1981 to 2001 and Ryan was always in the top 15 during that span.

Re: Fandom Venting

Someone actually sort of did this and wrote an article about it, like most and least common NHL names or something. All I remember from it is that there is only one Sidney, no active Marios and Waynes (I think they were really interested in players sharing names with "greats"?) and a shitton of Mikes.

Re: Fandom Venting

So the moral of the story is that if you want your kind to be a "great" hockey player, don't pick a male name that makes the list of most popular baby names in Canada that year?

(I just googled out of curiosity, and there will be a lot of Liams, Logans, and Lucases being drafted in 18 years, if anyone was wondering.)

Re: Fandom Venting

Connor's not too uncommon. There aren't a million of them in the league, but he's not the only one by a long shot.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Hey, sometimes it's Brenden.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
My team has neither. Clearly we need to make some offseason acquisitions.

Re: Fandom Venting

DA

Mine doesn't either. It does have a Mike, though.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
But do you have any Matt or Ryans?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
They are present and accounted for.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Did you check your AHL team first? No need to trade when you've got one in the wings.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Straight down through the ECHL! Clearly our old GM had an aversion. Now that I think about, we just drafted one, so we should be good.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Someone else mentioned that NHLers never enunciate, so they're probably ok just mumbling a vague "Br-d-n" sounding noise and that covers everyone from Holtby to Schenn to Dubinsky to Shanahan.

Other anon

Oh, right, I figured out the one for my team - it's Devan.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I was going to say the Stars had Jasons and Patricks instead, but the TStars have a Brennan, a Brenden AND a Branden.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Brenden Morrow, forever and always.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Just because the Stars don't have an NHL level Brandon, it hasn't stopped the national announcers from calling some of them Brandon.

I like Roo. It's also a joke as roux means redheaded, which places it pretty high in the quality nickname ranks.
