Re: Hockey Media

I don't know why. It takes about ten minutes and a couple of tries to learn, and osmosis isn't going to cover it. Everyone at my house learned how to wash their own clothes at the very latest, twelve years old.

As soon as you were tall enough to load the machine, you could learn.

Even if you don't "learn" it, it's really intuitive?? The dial has settings that are self-explanatory? I don't really know how people could not get it.*

*Unless American washing machines are different from European ones in their difficulty level lol.

Logic tells me this should be true.

Actual experiences proved that for males of a certain age laundry is akin to actual rocket science.

Re: Hockey Media

I think people who grow up in households that like, actually separate their laundry think it's more complicated than it is. My family is the "throw it all in and hit the button" sort and my little brother definitely knows how to work the machine (he's 10).

+1 My mom has a complicated system of what kind of laundry needs which specific setting, and I only grew out of my fear of washing machines once I moved out and did everything on my own with a different machine.

+2

My mom also had a complicated sorting system and a laundry machine with a lot of buttons and settings, so the first time I did my own laundry, I was like, "How do I wash a black and white dress that's 50% cotton and 50% polyester? Do I do a warm wash-cold rinse? Hot-hot? Hot-cold? What is a 'permanent press'? Why does this button have ten different settings? Ahhhh!!"

I can't guarantee that, but I suspect it's true about North American vs European washing machines. I got a text message from a friend who was on exchange in Canada from Finland with a photo of the washing machine settings and "Help". And she's been doing her own laundry for like 6 years.

For the record, the default options I usually the right ones. I've encountered a lot of buttons across many washing/drying machines and have only pressed two buttons (cold water, medium heat). They even have pods of detergent now so you can just throw that in, press start, and run.

na from the US

Since meme reminded me to start my laundry, I just looked at my washing machine. The 4 dials allow for 2 rinse options, 4 temperature options, 4 water level options, and 4 cycle options. Each cycle option is further subdivided into different amounts of time for washing, and can also be advanced to later stages in the cycle. It also tells you to "push and turn to set. Pull to start. Push to stop."

It's not that hard to figure out once you know the basic process, but much like microwaves, it is a matter of learning the buttons for each machine. You know what you want to do, but it may take a bit to figure out how to get there.

lol, I guess they are harder than European washing machines then! Mine has 1 dial and 1 start/stop button!

If House Hunters International has taught me one thing, it's us USers really enjoy our oversized, overly complicated appliances.

Re: Hockey Media

It has taught me that I'm happy my washing machine isn't in my kitchen or bathroom.

Re: Hockey Media

What is wrong with having your washing machine there? It's convenient! ;)

Re: Hockey Media

ayrt

Is it really?? (Honest question. Not sarcasm) It seems really inconvenient. But I'm a spoiled American who thinks not having a laundry room with a door I can close is inconvenient.

Re: Hockey Media

From: (Anonymous)
Yes? I guess if you have a house with enough space for a laundry room then it doesn't matter either way, but if you live in a flat, or don't have a big house, it's way nicer having it there than in the cellar. You can just pop in your laundry and don't have to walk through the hallways and up and down the stairs with your dirty laundry like a fool, lol.

I don't understand why it would be inconvenient. The noise? They're not even noisy, except for the spin cycle, I guess. But like, people usually don't do laundry when they want to chill in the kitchen or something lol

Does this mean European laundry machines are quieter, I wonder?

Re: Hockey Media

I'm an American, and my apartment has a laundry closet in the kitchen and it's fine? I mean, it has doors to shut, but it's not a room. It's a closet.

Re: Hockey Media

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah I know some people who having the hook ups and space for a first floor laundry was a selling point for their home.

Re: Hockey Media

USers work longer hours and more days a year. They can't be walking to & from the grocery store daily with one day worth of meals every day and so on and so forth.

Re: Hockey Media

Always thought the same, and then my sister moved out of our parents' home into another city for university and called me for help the first few times. I guess if you never been taught, the choices of programmes can be confusing, lol.
