Anze Kopitar named LA KIngs new captain.

I have mixed feelings about this. He's obviously going to be a great team representative, but I dislike them giving him a bunch of additional responsibilities just because they want their 50th anniversary celebration to be more aesthetically pleasing. I love the idea of Captain Kopitar. Hell, I've been saving my money to buy a Team Europe jersey, because of him. He's hands-down my pick for captain.

But stripping captaincies willy-nilly doesn't sit well with me. If they had managed to trade Brown, that'd be one thing. But regardless of his on-ice performance, I haven't heard any rumors about him being a bad captain off of the ice. He certainly regurgitates Dean Lombardi's speechified nonsense better than anyone else on the team in a way that makes you know he really believes in it, and it seems cruel to deny him those anniversary rituals.

The Kings beatwriters I follow on Twitter seem across the board to be saying as far as the media is concerned Brown was a good captain always available (even when most every one else wasn't.)

The thing that bothers me is I've seen in a couple of places that they told Kopitar when he signed his new deal that he was going to be made captain, and my feelings onDustin Brown aside, I'm bothered by the idea that you'd sell out your current captain that way.

Dean Lombardi seems like he has really terrible people management skills.

Dustin Brown is, by all means, a heart-and-soul guy, and he's been aware that his contract is a drain on the team for a while. I'm sure he okayed it (he does love Kopitar a whole lot), but on the personal side I do agree. It's a shitty thing to do to someone who lead the team to two Cups and has been around the longest out of anyone.

IMO the fact that they stripped him means that they're sure they can't trade him. If they could have traded him and made Kopitar captain afterwards, they would have, but no one wants the contract (goes through 2022, I believe).

I think Dean Lombardi's philosophy is to see all the players as pieces before he sees them as people, which is a good skill to have as a GM but not as a human being.

That being said, Kopitar is going to be a great captain and this'll finally shut up all the idiots who think it should be Doughty.

Idk, given his propensity to weep over them. He does seem to have a very strange emotional relationship to them, though.

That's the weird thing!! He's like half cold-hearted bastard and half "you are all my children and I love you so very much please don't ever disappoint me."

I feel like he's that kind of obsessively "loving" right until the moment a player disappoints him (or there's a substantially better player/offer on the table), and then he becomes the cold-hearted bastard.

Lombardi said he believes Brown can get his game back. @helenenothelen asked about a buyout. Lombardi said not at this time

Oh god, here we go again...

Well, he's probably not going to get caught transporting drugs across the border.

And if there was any danger of it before, he'll make sure there isn't now!

Lombardi will probably plant some on him.

You don't have to cross a national border to get to New York from Cali.

You say that like Lombardi is beyond convincing him his family needs an international vacation this summer.

Downside, of course, of Tiffany being right.

Re: What is up with your team? –– non-SCF edition

Probably just pumping him up for trade hopes. Unlike with the Mike Richards situation, there's no advantage to buying him out this year versus next year. There is instead advantage to waiting in terms of how much the buyout would cost and for how long he'd be on the cap. Additionally, Brown may not be worth his cap hit, but he's still one of only 10 Kings that got double digit goals, and I'm not sure those are points they can afford to lose as low-scoring as they are.

Re: What is up with your team? –– non-SCF edition

I hate quoting John Hoven, because he's such an ass, but I don't think he did okay it or at least not until he was given no choice. He said Brown was blind-sided the other week when he was told he was losing the C and was kind of questioning how it was possible he didn't notice the writing on the wall. FWIW, Hoven also said he was told that in that meeting that his contract was untradeable. The Kings apparently tried all this past season.

I do agree that at least this will keep us safe from people talking about Doughty getting it.

That seems incredibly shitty, wtf. And just a bad way to do business.

He used to be an agent and before that a lawyer, so blood-sucking is in his nature.

Is that something you've seen on Twitter? I haven't seen that, but that's one place I don't go.

I don't know where I saw it first - it's here too - http://mayorsmanor.com/2015/12/anze-kopitar-contract-nearly-done-with-la-kings/

But after reading that other article it was probably Friedman.

Maybe I'm missing something, but both of those just say that the Kings were probably going to be making Kopitar captain. There's nothing in them about promising it to Kopitar or saying it to Kopitar when he signed his contract or even during negotiations.
