Re: Exchanges, etc - hockey rarepair exchange

From: (Anonymous)
I matched on my pet rare pair for the first time ever in an exchange even though I always offer it, so that's exciting. Looking forward to coming up with something.

Easy as pie, Aaron Ekblad/Megan Mitchell/Willie Mitchell http://archiveofourown.org/works/7557127

It's a bit heavy on the pining, confused puppy Ekblad trope, but I liked it.

DA -Isn't Jaya Singh a guys name anyway?

I only know Sikhs who are called Singh, but it's part of their religion, men use Singh and women Kaur either as their surname or their middle name.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
There are plenty of women surnamed Singh and a whole lot of people surnamed Singh who are not Sikh.

No, I'm annoyed, too. Now that she actually lives from writing and profits directly from her readers, I don't think it was unreasonable of her to expect to write more and stroke her ego less... All those polls are ridiculous ugh.

Plus, I'm still annoyed her Robbie and Georgie stuff has taken over everything. I've stopped reading that one after one chapter though.

I always felt that her female characters are token characters, only there to... show that she's feminist? Doesn't ignore women? Idk.

Does anyone have any fun facts about Devante Smith-Pelly? I've looked up basic biographical stuff, but all I really know otherwise is that he was in the Habs boy band and he was really really sad when he got traded to NJ. I just wanna know general character stuff, fun social media things, what kind of guy he is in the locker room, beautiful hockey highlights, etc.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I actually like the Robbie and Georgie story! Except, like has been discussed on meme before, the inaccuracies. And the quality decline is very apparent in the narration.

Re: Women's Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
I don't live anywhere near the team I support but I seriously considered buying tickets last year anyway. I'm a ticket holder for an NHL team, though, and I spend beaucoups of money on hockey tickets in general, so tossing a couple of hundred dollars at them for season tickets I won't use as support isn't really a big deal to me.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I might read that story when it's done, but I don't want to start another one where the plot and endgame gets away from her. :/

Re: Exchanges, etc - Poly Hockey Exchange

From: (Anonymous)
Who on earth thinks Megan should be an accountant and not a baker in a bakery AU? Or that a struggling bakery owner should hire an accountant before a baking assistant or front of shop person, or at all, for that matter? If people insist on writing dumb AUs they should at least have them make sense >:(

Re: Exchanges, etc - Poly Hockey Exchange

From: (Anonymous)
Without having read the fic and probably missing a point or two, if you struggle financially an accountant can get your finances in order and point out where you're loosing money and maybe help you change that. If you're struggling with time management, maybe as a baker you don't want to do all the paperwork and prefer to be in your shop and/or baking?

Re: Exchanges, etc - Poly Hockey Exchange

From: (Anonymous)
I have no intention of touching this fic, but I imagine it would depend on what exactly th accountant would do. A fully in-house employee? Hell no. A CPA who has multiple other clients who can help small business owners? Sure.

Re: Women's Hockey

From: (Anonymous)
I live nowhere near a team and I bought a season ticket to my favorite team last year just as a show of support; only used one of them when I flew in for a game, but felt good about the purchase anyway.

TBH I didn't even think about a full time, in house employee when I heard accountant and bakery. That would really be too much.

Great article! People should check the empwr.ca link at the end, too: There's a video from Gabe, as well as Joey Hishon, and some other hockey folks.

Player Profile: Devante Smith-Pelly (http://ducks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=638713)

Lists pizza as his favorite food, with his top choice coming from Pizza Hut. After seeing “Avatar” a couple of times in 3D at the theater when it was released, Smith-Pelly said that is his favorite movie. The first car he owned was a 2007 Jeep SRT-8, which he still has. A fan of all types of music except country, he calls Drake his favorite artist. If he did not play hockey, he would possibly have tried his hand at baseball. A big fan of the sport, he roots for the Toronto Blue Jays. Keep up with Devante Smith-Pelly on Twitter at @smithpelly23.

5. Favourite pregame meal or ritual?

“Me and a guy on our team, Riley Brace, we always used to get yogurt and berries and a large [Tim Hortons] double-double before a game … we did it one game and we both played pretty well, so we kind of just stuck with it.”

Smith-Pelly Excels In Junior Year (http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=530907)

Devante Smith-Pelly is incapable of giving a standard answer. It just isn’t in him.

His parents own a café but he hasn’t eaten there.

“I kind of try to watch what I eat,” he said. “The stuff there isn’t exactly the healthiest. There are muffins, patties, sandwiches, you name it.”

Why did his parents bestow two surnames on him? Couldn’t tell you.

His Dad operates a limo service. There have been famous people in back: “Drew Doughty, (Buffalo Sabre) Tyler Ennis, a couple of music people,” he said.

DS-P Go - An Interview with Devante Smith-Pelly (http://www.anaheimcalling.com/2010/10/12/1736923/ds-p-go-an-interview-with-devante-smith-pelly)

"I guess there was a lot of talk of [the Maple Leafs picking me] during the Draft," Smith-Pelly says. "I was mic'd up by Leafs TV, and I guess that was the hint they might be picking the hometown guy. Then I got picked, and they took the mic off me."

* They'll also argue movies, video-game capabilities, NBA favorites and the quality of Etem's guitar playing, but agree on Justin Bieber: When a billboard promoting the U.S.-Canada Olympic semifinal read, Loser Keeps Bieber, "both of us had a problem with that," Etem said.

Their chief agreement is on hockey and their friendship, which dates back to age 12. Etem was Anaheim's first draft pick in 2010 and Smith-Pelly was the Ducks' second.

* They met when Etem went to Toronto to visit a friend, Chase Basily, who also played Southern California youth hockey before migrating north. Basily joined a team that had a young winger, Smith-Pelly.

They played in tournaments throughout Ontario and Quebec, and the two also went to summer hockey camps together. They continued to talk long distance when Etem went back to California and, later, when he moved to Minnesota to play prep school hockey. They engaged the same agent, Eustace King.

* "I'm trying to make songs right now," Etem said, sending Smith-Pelly's laughter up an octave.

"Last year, he'd be jamming or whatever all day, trying to make tunes," Smith-Pelly said. "It was terrible. It got better, but it was still terrible."

* Smith-Pelly rooms with goalie John Gibson in Virginia Beach. Etem has his own apartment in downtown Norfolk, close enough to allow him to skateboard to work at Scope. It also gives Smith-Pelly and Gibson a place to crash after celebrating a win with an occasional late night on Granby Street.

Devante Smith-Pelly's unusual first NHL goal (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2011/11/ducks-nhl-nashville-devante-smith-pelly.html)

There was near cyber silence when Ducks rookie Devante Smith-Pelly checked in Thursday morning.

He figured to hear something about his first NHL goal, which came against Nashville. But ... nothing.

"It was kind of weird just looking at my phone and no one really said anything and no one really knew," he said after practice.

Not even his parents.

What happened was that Smith-Pelly wasn't awarded the goal until after the game. He didn't even know when reporters entered the dressing room for interviews and only found out when he was about to leave Honda Center.

Beleskey, Smith-Pelly and Ducks Staff Promote Literacy at Reading is the Goal Day (http://ducks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=738575 / http://ducks.nhl.com/club/blogpost.htm?id=33529)

* Ducks wingers Devante Smith-Pelly and Matt Beleskey were featured guests at the assembly hosted by Ducks reporter Kent French. The two of them read from the children's hockey book called Brady Brady and the Twirlin' Torpedo, as one read the text and the other showed the illustrations (and they switched halfway through).

They also performed admirably during a Q&A session with the kids, fielding questions that included, "What was your worst injury?" or "How many penalties have you taken?"

* Watch in the video below as they reveal that neither of them attended college. The collective gasp in the audience is a good sign for the future academic potential of these kids. (Also note the polite applause from just one kid when Beleskey offers, "I did take one class ... and I passed.")

Ducks youngster has legs to stand on (http://www.ocregister.com/articles/pelly-343468-smith-ducks.html)

* We're here to expose — that is, XXX-pose — Devante Smith-Pelly, to offer a revealing glimpse of the rookie forward, behind the scenes and without pants.

"His lower body is really impressive," Coach Bruce Boudreau says. "Thick. He's got the thick legs. Almost like a track star."

Despite all the impressions Smith-Pelly has made on the ice this season — and 19-year-olds don't last in the NHL if they aren't having an impact — the most permanent image of him remains his appearance under all that armor.

* Unsure of his long-term future here, he spent the season's first two months living in a nearby hotel, hanging with fellow NHL rugrats Maxime Macenauer and Andrew Gordon. In December, Ducks management assured Smith-Pelly that he could look for an apartment.

But the first place he found refused to rent to him. A Canadian, Smith-Pelly had established no credit in the United States. The realtor he hired even vouched for him, without success.

"I think they told the guy, 'Hey, he plays for the Ducks. He's good for it,'" Smith-Pelly says, now smiling. "But he didn't want to take a chance, I guess."

Smith-Pelly then found a place in Newport Beach and was OK'd by that landlord — as long as his parents agreed to co-sign the lease.

* Also too young to legally rent an automobile, Smith-Pelly had to wait for his parents to ship his car from Toronto just so he had a way to get to work.

As for enjoying a postgame beer, Smith-Pelly can't score one of those legally, either.

* "I wouldn't go with a sprinter with Devo," Matt Beleskey says. "Maybe a linebacker. He's got one of the biggest backs I've ever seen. He's a huge kid."

Says George Parros: "His body is dense. I would say fullback more than anything. You get a guy like Devo, you hit him and you feel it. There are guys out there who have a really good center of gravity. They're heavy on the puck and hard to get off the puck. He's one of those guys."

Ducks' Smith-Pelly has found a home (http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/11871185/nhl-devante-smith-pelly-found-home-one-nhl-top-lines)

* Devante Smith-Pelly is already the only NHL player named after a member of his parents' favorite 1990s R&B supergroup. But the 22-year-old power forward named after Jodeci singer/songwriter Devante Swing is eyeing a more impressive distinction: left wing on one of the league's top lines.

* But Smith-Pelly most credits his growth to NHL players Chris Stewart, Anthony Stewart and Wayne Simmonds, who like Weekes all grew up in Scarborough. Smith-Pelly was formally taken under their wings when he signed with their agent, Eustace King.

For years, Smith-Pelly has regularly trained with Chris Stewart, who now plays with the Buffalo Sabres, and Philadelphia Flyers winger Simmonds. When the Smith-Pelly family flew to Los Angeles for the 2010 draft, Chris Stewart joined them. While in L.A., they stayed at the home of Simmonds, who played for the Kings at the time and was living with then-teammate Drew Doughty.

"I've known them since I was 16. Just training with them all those years and watching them on the ice I picked up a lot," Smith-Pelly said. "If it wasn't for them I'm not sure how everything would turn out. They had a lot to do with that."

But it wasn't just their on-ice resilience that motivated Smith-Pelly. The Stewart brothers and Simmonds each navigated dire financial straits to find success in a sport that can be prohibitively expensive. Their story especially hits home with Wayne Pelly, who was forced to give up hockey at 13 because his family couldn't afford it. He instead took up basketball and won three consecutive national championships at Brandon University in Manitoba.

Catching Up With Devante Smith-Pelly (http://thehockeywriters.com/catching-up-with-devante-smith-pelly/)

* In addition, Smith-Pelly added that his hockey roommate and close friend Emerson Etem, “May actually come down for that,” referring to Ovo fest.

* Devante has plans to spend time with the community, “I usually do some charity ball hockey. Play On has ball hockey tournaments all throughout Canada and I usually do that during the summer. I know Alex Semin has a charity road hockey game. I’m going to be doing that as well and I hope to do more this summer.”

I see that the Buffalo News continues to be a cesspit that releases victim names.

Very sad to hear that she had to have multiple surgeries and blood transfusions. No wonder she ended up at the hospital.

Re: EKane civil suit

From: (Anonymous)
+1 to your whole comment. I was shocked reading her name - completely didn't expect it. Do news sites feel like it's different in civil cases or is Buffalo News just especially scummy?

I had no idea she was so badly injured. I remember reading she'd gone to the hospital back when the news originally broke in December, but I naively thought she was going in for a tox screen or because someone had thought she was suffering alcohol poisoning or something. The possibility that she could be so badly injured she needed multiple surgeries didn't even cross my mind, but things always seem to be so much worse than I anticipate. :(

Re: EKane civil suit

DA

Same here, had no idea she was this badly injured. Also the wording "personal injuries" seems ominous.

Re: EKane civil suit

From: (Anonymous)
The Buffalo News is especially scummy.

All I remember hearing is that she had an unspecificed injury, no more than that. I pictured something much more mild than what it sounds like, though. (She also did have a tox screen at the time, because she had no memory of how she'd been injured, and they were looking for evidence of what might have caused the memory loss.)
