Trope talk

It's thurday lets talk tropes. I will post a trope on a Thursday for discussion. I am going to take them from this list http://fanlore.org/wiki/List_of_Tropes_in_Fanworks

We can then talk about how it applies to hockey fic, feel free to talk about what you enjoy about it and link to fic that you think it works well in.

Anyone who wants to discuss a specific trope can post about it at anytime though.

I picked this one to start as I don't really get it but they do seem popular. What do people like to see included in them? What's your favorite thing about them?

I haven't liked a lot of them in this fandom. Not because of the writing, but because I don't think people have done a great job converting hockey into royalty. For example, coaches usually disappear and don't appear as characters, but for some reason parents do.

They can be a nice change of setting without mundanity, but what I really like about royalty AUs is that they usually include marriage tropes I love such as forced marriage, arranged marriage, marriage of convenience. Royalty AUs often have themes that include duty and sacrifice that I like in my fic, too.

Probably my favorite Royalty AU in this fandom is the orphaned "And the rest is rust and stardust" which is Kessel/Bozak.

How does that list not have "woobie" on it? Is woobification not a trope?

AYRT - I guess not according to fanlore. (I'm sure someplace there is a record of their discussion on what made their list)

Maybe because you can have your woobie in any of the tropes, you can have them being a mer-woobie or a royal woobie or a woobie while a centaur. I'm not sure people set out to deliberately write a woobie.

I do now have a mental image of a centaur trying to ice skate which is a crack fic that the world needs.

Selected by random number generator this week we get hatesex.
Seems like Hockey would be a good fandom for it, obviously there is Crosby/Giroux but are there any other good examples?

What do people like or not like about it?

What do you wish people wrote more of?

I'm surprised there isn't more of it. This is the perfect fandom for hatesex and rivalries and all kinds of darkness, but most of what I come across, outside of specific requests on sinbin, is friends-to-lovers or AUs with meetcutes where they have no reason to hate each other in the first place.

Maybe I'm wrong, that's just my impression.

I think the only proper hatesex fic I've read in this fandom was JaBenn/Seguin of all ships lol

I think I'm too weak for the trope, I always end up hoping everyone will just get along eventually, and then I'm like, way to miss the point, self.

I just want people who hate each other to fuck angrily in corridors; maybe fuelled by a chippy game. Lots of rough sex, biting, blood from when someone bites someone else's previously split lip splitting it again...

And when it's all done they still hate each other but maybe they'll fuck again next time they play, maybe not.

Thinks back to all the Ladd/Kesler hatesex.

Ovechkin gets bitten by the sheep that Russian TV station gave him for his birthday one year, at which point it disappears into the night and he becomes a were-ship, I mean sheep. I have no idea what would happen next but it probably wouldn't involve falling out of windows.

I'd like a more serious/darker take. I know the trope is pretty much the opposite of dark, but in general I like the "crack being treated seriously" treatment and I just think there's potential for fucking someone up in animal transformation fic.

This is becoming one of my favorite tropes. I'm not into some of the horror ideas mentioned upthread, but I wouldn't mind seeing some that are more serious than "lol, he turns into a puppy when stressed." Maybe Tyler Bozak has always hated the feeling of being a maple tree, staying in one spot, rooted. A feeling that gets worse after Phil has been traded, like he's been left behind and Phil will do all these great things, and Bozie will never change.

One thing that often comes up when the second form idea is used in fics is why don't teams name themselves the Minnesota Goal Scorers or the Tampa Bay Stanley Cup Winners. But maybe it's the other way around. It's not that team name/mascot/etc. determines second form, it's that teams name themselves after the second form they start to take on. That's why Vegas hasn't been named yet. No one in the front office has started changing, and no one knows what the second form will be. Of course, front offices can be hit or miss. Front office folks don't always change and there's a lot of opinions about whether it matters if a coach or a GM or a VP transforms. Not to mention that as people get older, sometimes their form can revert to old teams. Nobody gave George McPhee grief that his eagle looked a lot like a falcon when he was the GM of the Capitals, but maybe people are whispering now that he's the reason Vegas is nameless and the owner is losing merch money daily. What if they pin their hopes on the expansion draft with crazy reporters stalking all the claimed players over the summer hoping to get the first scoop on what the new second form will be? How does that make the players feel? Are they still changing into their old forms or unable to transform at all as the summer wanes? How much pressure are newly signed free agents under to come into camp able to transform into the right thing or is that the reason for the weird team building activities we hear about teams doing in camp (there's an expectation that it takes time and practice and feeling)?

If it's going to be longer than like 1k, then I need some meat to go with it, some kind of emotional arc that makes me feel things that in turn make me appreciate the fluff.

Tentacle fic - Do you like lots of tentacles or just one? With or without Ovipoisition? Anything you would like to read which hasn't been done yet?

Oviposition is my favorite thing about tentacles, for sure. However, they can also be fun for setting up particular emotional scenarios, like xeno/exploration of unexpected anatomy, shame/comfort ("I know they're super weird, right?" / "Are you kidding, I love them"), that kind of thing.

i love any and all tentacle fic, but especially the dubcon kind, where the character is reluctantly into it (with or without Special Fluids). i also love: really big tentacles or many little ones (so stretching, basically), and tentacles fucking the character's mouth and manhandling them.

i can take or leave oviposition tbh, it's not what i'm after in tentacle fic, but it can definitely be hot.

and something i want but haven't read yet is this thing i read on imogenedisease's tumblr this morning: "tentacle porn gang!bang? As in, the way that the Sens come down after a game is for Sven to get fucked, while his tentacles do some fucking of their own." it sounds like a nightmare to write, but the visual is A+.

I like it best when it's the "creepy monster from the depths" type, not so much the "human with normal human motivations has tentacles." It's important to me that there's an element of horror and a sense of sinister purpose. For that reason, the Landeskog tentacle fill on the kink meme was so damn good to me. A literal creepy monster from the depths! So great.

I like tentacles of all sorts, with and without oviposition! When more than one human is involved (i.e. it's not a tentacle monster) I like seeing navigation of the inherent foreign-ness of the situation and the trust/emotional aspect of it as well.
