Re: Playoff feels

If the Preds manage to pull this off, I just realized there are going to be SO MANY handwringing articles about the Hawks going out in the first round two years in a row, and I'm going to enjoy them SO MUCH. (Well, I probably won't read them. But I'll enjoy knowing they're out there.)

Re: Playoff feels

I'll be interested to see if the tide begins to turn against Toews, superleader, who got his huge contract and then failed to leader them.

But we'll see. Still time for the Preds to implode or the Hawks to get their shit together.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
It's time for superleader Toews to show some emotion and get the team going. He should take a page out of Karlsson's book! This whole silent stoic leader thing isn't working.

what's the hawks cap situation looking like this year? they've had to get rid of big pieces for like 3 years in a row so I'm wondering (hoping) if they will again

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
Can't wait for them to get stuck with shitty overpaid players and miss the playoffs for years.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
At a glance, I'd say their cap situation looks fine. No RFAs really looking to get paid, or at least no one I've heard of. Oduya and Darling are the UFAs; I suppose Darling might get a small raise, but I wouldn't expect Oduya to.

None of the pending FAs are due for a big raise, but there are quite a lot of them on the roster, and Panarin's cap hit is due to increase from about $800,000 to $6 mil. They do have Scuderi's hit (about $1.1 mil) coming off the books to balance it out a little.

I missed that Panarin's raise kicked in. That's a biggie, especially with the bonuses.

Yeah, it's easier to notice it in Cap Friendly's layout, where they've already got the projected cap space totaled up for future seasons based on the cap hits of who's already signed through those years. Their expected bonus overage is already more than next year's projected available cap space (they have a bit more than $1 mil to pay out to guys besides Panarin), and eight of the guys on their current roster are RFA or UFA. I'm looking forward to their off-season.

next year's projected available cap space -- which I've just noticed isn't accounting for the estimated $3 mil cap ceiling increase, but still, that's too small an amount of money to resign or replace the amount of guys they have to resign/replace, as it stands.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
na Don't forget, at least one guy will go to Vegas, though it will most likely not be someone who offers much cap relief.

Re: Playoff feels

But that doesn't really substantially change their cap situation, considering one guy going to Vegas means one more body they'll need to replace? Even if Vegas takes the highest-paid player the Hawks can expose, which is Kruger, getting rid his ~$3.08 mil salary leaves the Hawks roughly $5.3 mil to fill nine roster spots, which averages out to ~$590,000 per player, just over league minimum. Other than Kruger and Panarin, literally every other Blackhawk making over $1 mil has some form of NTC/NMC, so they won't find it easy to shed salary.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
League minimum is supposed to be 650,000 next season, I think (which doesn't really change much, lol, just wanted to point it out).

Re: Playoff feels

Well, even better! I'll add another $612,500 to their cap space, assuming they aren't going to keep their emergency goaltender up -- that works out to ~$5.93 mil for 9 players, for ~$660,000 a player, just above the new minimum.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
ayrt I didn't say it would substantially change their cap situation. The point was that it will affect who they have to replace/resign.

Aha, Cap Friendly is the other site that's still around. I've lost track, because they keep shutting down.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
DA I just gave that site a look and this is OT, but wtf is up with Carolina's cap space situation?!

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
OT to your OT, but wow, they're going to be paying Semin for a long, long time.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
Panarin hit all his bonuses this year which will be applied to the cap next season, 2.575 million. Imo they also need a first line winger, someone like Saad is sorely missed.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
From what I've read and heard from analysts, a significant amount of people expect Darling not to return as the Hawks backup. Some see him as a candidate for starter for teams in need of one (Carolina or Winnipeg, for example).

But then again, Hawks seem to have the best luck at signing guys to sweet hometown discounts of all the NHL teams.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
Maybe they'll have less luck with hometown discounts if they go out in the first round two years in a row?

(A nonnie can hope.)

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
Panarin played himself into some serious schedule B bonus, which will be counted against next year's cap, so without any changes, they'd be over.

Re: Playoff feels

From: (Anonymous)
It's still not enough for the team's performance bonuses to exceed the overage cushion, so it won't affect their cap budgeting.

Re: Playoff feels

Ah, no, never mind, I see I've read the performance bonus + overage lines wrong on cap friendly.
