This is the sixth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

Yup. But ~it's even more important for people to be able for people to discuss fic than it is for authors to feel comfortable creating it~ and ~new writers will come replace them~ so ~*~who cares~*~. [ROLLING MY EYES FOREVER] Nobody writes stuff like iBear anymore, is2g.

I did what the anon above me said and looked back at my bookmarks for people from 2010-2013 and I see a lot of people who no longer write hockey fic but are still active in other fandoms and who will reblog hockey stuff. But yeah! We're not collectively responsible -___- Ugh there was so much cool and unique stuff from that period too. I'm trying to imagine the slew animal transformation fic that was so popular a few years back being introduced today and can already see the "what do you want to fuck a squid or something, you freak?" trolling.

Add me as another person in the pile who's been in fandom forever but is glad it's not my only fandom.

Besides the few an anon can think of who specifically divulged leaving because wank, I'm not sure if you can attribute every single person moving on as anything besides most people's fandom having an expiration date. I was in Supernatural fandom for five years and quit when I was done, no looking back. 2010 was a freaking long time ago, especially in fandom years. The entire Inception fandom lived and died between now and then.

da I can think of several authors even earlier/older than the ones listed in another post who said they left because of the wank that arrived with some of the authors listed. Their work now is locked, mostly on LJ, but there were also a bunch who left because their interests changed, or their time commitments, or their jobs, etc.

Except fic has been slowing down since then and there's no new tropes or kinks so the remaining fic is the same thing rehashed the same way and the trolls now are 10x worse than the early -10s era were.

But yeah if that doesn't worry you then find all the comfort you need!

I don't believe fic is slowing down at all. A lot of it's on tumblr, but there is loads of new stuff posted every day.

not that the authors listed were responsible for the wank, but "with" meaning that it arrived around that time. I don't know who was responsible for the wank.

(sa tbh, I have strong suspicions based on who behaved how publicly at the time, but yes, the circle of wank has been going on a long time, and some of the people who have left because of it also were part of the reason people left before them)

I would agree, but because hockey is already a niche sport, and sports RPF is niche enough in fandom as it is (the people are are in fandom are likely to have bad irl connotations with sports and sports culture. How many people who are in Hockey RPF have you heard say "I always hated sports but then my BFF got into hockey so I gave it a try and now I'm hooked"?), and RPF is a huge DNW for a lot of people, the natural occurrence of people moving on isn't the same for this fandom as it is for a movie of TV show, because the odds of enough people replacing them are slim.

Add on to that that even if RPF + Sports + Hockey doesn't bother you, we have players who are problematic, people who don't understand the forth wall and link primers or fic to players, people who try to break the forth wall against our will (Aja, all those mibble articles), and a history of players discovering fic all on their own and talking about it, we're already having a hard time attracting people.

Then say that the person decides to risk it and joins fandom anyway, they see all the wank and discover that we have trolls that will dedicate their time and effort to writing triggering fic and gifting it to you, constantly bringing up your name and tearing apart your fics, and that even the ~reasonable~ people will comment to tell you that you should have written their OTP instead or that the kink you're into isn't want here?

Forcing people out and casually having people leave isn't a good thing for this fandom. The odds are stacked against us and that's why we're small in the first place. If people come looking for some semblance of support and see a lot of people saying "authors are replaceable" or "I can't control other people; it's not my responsibility" or who will jump in to say that the gross behavior isn't all that bad because "there's worse out there". That keeps people away, and most everyone with a semi-big circle of friends probably has at least one friend who says they don't want to get into Hockey RPF because it doesn't seem to mesh with their narrative tropes or the wank is just too much.

(Inception is a closed fandom so I don't really think it applies.)

I think a lot of people don't realize that being okay with RPF and sports is a niche thing that not everybody can get into. Most exchanges don't even allow RPF unless the person has been dead for 400 years or it's based upon a fictionalized version, like Alexander (2004) or Generation Kill.

And then this fandoms various wanks are so well documented and it never seems to go away. Less wanky fandoms like Baseball RPF or even Football RPF (the wank back then was different, although the wank that shut down the last kink meme was stupid and petty) died from less hardcore wank.

Also there were threats to doxx writers who wrote shit that an asshole troll didn't like. Meme may have forgotten or brushed that off but the casual rubberneckers on twitter on FFA probably sure as hell haven't.

Um, no. It's the gross behavior that drives people away, not people opinionating on an anon meme about the gross behavior. "I can't control other people" does not drive people away. The other people drive people away.

Quit trying to shift responsibility from the people who are doing the actual gross things. Sending anon hate to people's ask boxes? That's gross. Leaving flames on their fics? That's gross. Coming here to say someone is sick and wrong for writing something? That's gross, and also the only item on this list even related to meme, but fortunately there are people here that will disagree - I was in this thread early this morning, disagreeing with the troll - and mods will screen things look fishy.

My refusal to take responsibility for someone's gross behavior: not gross.

But in this thread there have been people who have insisted that there is no point arguing with them or disagreeing with them because they are not responsible and it doesn't make anyone feel better.

If you don't do those things then obviously that isn't about you and you're not being gross.

If someone is only getting hate on here then you saying "other people are assholes and I can't control it" does nothing for them. Instead of even taking the topic in that direction, just shut down those actions and make it clear that you aren't okay with that happening.

If that author came here looking to see if the wank made it over here and they see a bunch of people saying "yeah it was bad but whatever if they leave then more authors will come" or "yeah alright it was kind of gross but there's worse stuff out there so???" then you've made yourself a part of the problem in making that author not feel safe and acting like it's more important to downplay the grossness and the effects of just because it wasn't who said it/was personally effected. It seems like you don't care about their feelings and so they won't care about your fic supply.

If you're not doing that then you're not a part of the problem and it isn't about you. You do not have to jump in and say that you aren't saying bad things so you don't why people are calling your gross. Nobody is calling you gross and if you feel attacked then that's between you and your own head.

So far as I know the only responses of "more authors will come" or whatever has been in response to people saying meme should have no fic discussion whatsoever. No one's downplaying actual assholery.

The major problem in this fandom is the troll we are not allowed to discuss. It is not the existence of this meme as an incidental space where said troll can make an appearance.

Talking about the troll would do literally nothing. We had a few months of being able to talk about them and all it did was feed them and make them attack the kink meme and upload all those badly written wanky fics to AO3. What more is this specific troll doing now? And how would talking about it help? Do you want a dedicated troll thread with all the troll updates?

If you think that having a place to talk about the troll would magically make it better. Talk about it in namespace, talk about it on FFA, talk about it on that no rules comm.

Most people who say messed up shit on this meme are not that specific troll. We can't do anything about the troll who obviously has issues but we can make sure that our more reasonable and unintentional trolls know that saying messed up shit isn't okay.

This is the first comment that made me realize this really is a #NotAllMen situation.

If you're an anon and other anons are being gross, people will say "ugh stop it gross anons". If YOU ARE NOT ACTING GROSS then you are not lumped in with "gross anons".

Saying that NOT ALL ANONS ARE BAD AND GROSS, ONLY SOME!! is not useful. Everybody knows that all anons aren't gross. Saying I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT ALL ANONS DO!!! STOP LUMPING ME IN WITH THEM I CAN'T CONTROL THEM!! Nobody is saying that you can grab them by the ear and make them apologize or stop.

What people ARE saying is to stop making it about you and just call out anons when you see them doing gross behavior. That's it. That's all anyone expects you to do. If you do that already then you're golden.

If that still doens't click or makes you feel defensive, turn it into #NotAllMen so it'll hopefully click.

If you're a man and other men are being gross, people saying "Ugh men are gross" does not mean they're attacking your personally. Going UM OK BUT NOT ALL MEN ARE GORSS???? doesn't help people who are being hassled by gross men. Be secure in your knowledge that you aren't a part of the problem, call out the other men who are being gross, and go about your fucking day.

When people say "ugh, [group] is gross", they do indeed mean that group is gross. Especially on an anon meme where no one is privileged above anyone else because we're all anonymous. No one is getting oppressed except when the mods are feeling particularly fascist. This is not #NotAllMen and equating a discussion about meme behavior with rape and sexual harassment is utterly unacceptable.

I get what you mean but I think movie fandoms are different. If they don't have sequels they usually die out after two years. Inception, TSN, etc. I'm dreading the day it happens to Kingsmen, which is why I hope that sequel will happen.

As long as Hockey still exists, RPF should still exist, especially if the two biggest pairings are still playing together. Only something drastic will make it end, like the surplus of wank, i.e what happened to Football RPF.
