From: (Anonymous)Look anon I get that you feel the need to pop your lowercase self up in every B/S thread because you think Segs and Benn can have everything they do explained away and that nothing they do is overly serious, but it is super fucked up to out someone like that. We all know he gets nudes on snapchat and facebook and twitter DMs from women all the time and he never screencaps those. What he did was messed up and the screencaps of it are going to be around until the end of time all with his name attached.

We get it, you love B+S. You don't see Kaner stans popping up to debate everyone who calls out his baldness. Patrick Burke can't stand Seguin and always shows how aggrivated he is when he has to deal with his latest bout of homophobia. That tells you everything you need to know. Dude has been forced into sensitivity training twice.

From: (Anonymous)I'm a third who can spot this anon. They use the same phrases and make the same excuses. It's really obvious but since they don't change it up to blend in I assume they want to be identifiable.
Baldness isn't banned. Saying mean things is. You can say Kaner's hair is thinning as a fact. If you feel the need to make it as a bad thing or a put down then you deserve to be screened.

From: (Anonymous)Patrick Burke blocked half of gay hockey twitter because he couldn't accept that he wasn't always the perfect representative and didn't get why a "sorry you were offended" apology isn't sufficient for some people. I don't know that he's your gold standard for This Person is/isn't A Homophobe.

From: (Anonymous)Still hasn't unblocked me, and I was only ever perfectly civil to him (he didn't like people I publicly agreed with). TheDukeOfAvon's fic "Only the game fish swims upstream" expresses the perfect mix of positive and negative feelings I feel towards YCP and Burke himself. The intentions are good and the effort is there but, equally, he would stand up and say things like you could be against marriage equality and still a good teammate and ally. Sorry. No. He is very invested in hockey as the most accepting and welcoming sport and the best image possible for pro sports. But he wouldn't, for example, challenge things like what happened to Michael Sam, because if it theoretically could have been sportsrelated he wouldn't accept that it probably wasn't; and as soon as something would happen with a hockey player he would bend over backwards to sweep it under the carpet. A very appearance-focused organisation. Appearances are important, I subscribe to the broken window theory, but it's not complete for me to say "You can hate gay people as long as you don't actively call them fags in the locker room".
I'm not all negative on him or the org. When he was more closely involved with YCP I remember him doing some excellent and admirable stuff with trans athletes, which is a really, really, really important area and one that is far less socially acceptable and understood than gay and bisexual people. But I don't think he's perfect or his assessment of people's characters is perfect. When someone says "He thinks Tyler Seguin is an asshole", my response is pretty much "Yeah but he thinks a bunch of my friends and I are assholes and we're all gay."

Having different ideologies about how to go about things doesn't mean that he's not doing good things. His way is helping all those college and high school kids come out, which is more than can be said for what any other group or armchair twitter people have done.

I haven't said he never did anything good, for the record. But if you're going to be The Official Arbitrator Of Whether What That Hockey Player Did Was Homophobic Or Not - and you can see people saying exactly that in this thread - it is actively destructive to say things like "you can be a good ally and anti marriage equality".

He grew up with and deals with homophobic athletes and asks them to tell him all the homophobic things they think so that he and Wade can deconstruct and educate them one by one. If he can do that without calling them out on twitter or making snips at them after the fact, what does that say about Segs?

From: (Anonymous)Bruke used to run a organization fighting for gay rights. From time to time actual gay people would take him to task for being the face of a gay org when he is straight. When people were - reasonably! - rude he was - reasonably! - upset and would block the really agressive ones. I think they're free to speak their mind but it is not his job to take it if he doesn't want to.
When he finally found people to take over, he - pretty quickly imo - started phasing himself out of the organization and let gay men and women - and some trans people - represent their own cause.

From: (Anonymous)I wasn't ever rude or aggressive towards Burke, for the record (and nor was he towards me). However, I do really resent the way you're characterising criticism of him. The problem wasn't that he was straight. The problem was that he was straight, and wouldn't listen to gay people. I don't think he ever acknowledged that he or YCP had made an error of any kind.

From: (Anonymous)He was never the sole decider for YCP. There were gay people in it form the start and they made choices together and as a straight guy he had to push the company line more than anyone else because he doesn't have the personal gay expirence to support whatever his stance was. He listened to gay people during every single board meeting and every single time he helped a school, team, or league deal with homophobia or helped a gay person come out.
Wade Davis never stood up for Sam either and he was the CEO or President at the time. Neither did they stand up for Kleuwe. They have to keep their contacts open. If you're going to be mad then be mad at the gay people who dropped those balls.
To counteract your bad personal relationship with him, I've only had good. I'm a POC and bisexual and he is always a delight to talk to on twitter about intersectionality and sexism driven homophobia. I can't think of a single other organization that had any member of their board talk about intersectioanlity, let alone some white straight rich guy.

He blocked a number of gay hockey fans after a series of disagreements (of varying intensity) about whether or not gay fans should get over - I can't even remember who the player was now, which is embarrassing, but he'd made a pretty awful couple of comments in a radio interview and then issued an extremely "I'm sorry you were offended" apology that was YCP-sanctioned. Burke had a go at gay fans who didn't think it was sufficient. That kept boiling over for a while and stuff like that kept coming up.
I don't think Burke is a homophobe. I think he's very sincere in trying to live up to his brother's legacy, which is enormously admirable and far more than most people do. I think he didn't always get it right the first time - and that's normal, people make mistakes, but I also think that he didn't really listen, and ultimately I'm glad more YCP spokespeople are out gay people because when you're the primary spokesperson for an org representing LGBTQ(etc) issues I do think you should listen to the people you claim to represent.

From: (Anonymous)more to the point, it's hard for people to take having everyone yell at them and telling them that they're wrong about something they care about. if he had stubbornly stayed on i would see your point but he obviously took what they said to heart and he true apology and admission of them being correct was him stepping the fuck down and letting lgbt people run the show.
thats way better than him falling over himself to say sorry on twitter.

he stepped down to go and work a paid job for player safety and I think it's really great that he was able to articulate that, but I don't get why stuff that he said and deleted about Seguin is indicative of Seguin's character if stuff he said about gay hockey twitter at the same time is not indicative of his own character.
