Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

I have exactly zero receipts, but if I am remembering the correct thing the woman who didn't care for him used the strangest things as evidence against him. Like she took extreme offense to him complaining about a woman on the bus. But she would ignore things like the podcast where he made some weird comments about the idea of women in the NHL, which you would think would be a better thing to show his views?

With the caveat that I do not remember this instance as clearly as the anons above me do, I do think that Steve is one of the good ones and that he is far more inclined than other hockey Twitter/general fandom bros are to examine his "problematic" views.

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah his benevolent sexism about women in the NHL is a genuine criticism. The other stuff not so much.

There are a few very vocal and very frustrating members of Feminist Hockey Twitter that I find grating and unhelpful. This person falls into that category, as well the people criticising PD's A-Z summer series.

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

I still don't know who "this person" is. :(

There are a lot of really annoying ones, and I don't know she went after Steve Dangle specifically, but java-genie/@tonimacattack was the one who went after the PD A-Z series and got hugely called out for it.

Shes someone that has often elicited a "stop being on my side!" reaction, but I managed to miss a PD related kerfuffle entirely, yay.

What is a PD A-Z series?

Puck Daddy did a series where they got a (female) blogger to do a breakdown for each franchise.

Here's the index: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/puck-daddy-s-summer-series--all-30-nhl-teams-from-a-to-zed-223232077.html

I hadn't realized the series was all done by women bloggers. Cool. I enjoyed the ones I read.

Why would someone have an issue with that? Jen Neale put the project together, and I know she has done roundtables with female hockey bloggers in the past. What's wrong with highlighting their work on this?

I know "outrage hobbyist" gets thrown around too much about women on hockey twitter, but tbh tonimacattack fits the bill of that damn well. Every time she shows up on my timeline as an RT (I don't follow her) it's about some half-baked thing she's trying to drum up attention for. What was her problem with the A-Z series?

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

From: (Anonymous)
AYRT

She has all but admitted that she stays unlocked because she likes the attention/RTs/favorites she gets and the popularity she's amassed. I agree with the other nonny, she's one of those that I don't want on my side because she poisons everything.

Her "problem" was that 1) PD was apparently bragging about it being all women 2) it was "mostly" white, straight women and 3) it was some women that hate her and don't call out every single questionable thing a male blogger does.

When she tweeted about it being all white women, a ton of the contributors/readers of the series called her out for generalizing and erasing the identities of the women of color/queer women that did contribute. She gave a prototypical "I'm sorry but [stupid doubling down comment]" like three times and just kept getting more and defensive, as she is wont to do.

It is so frustrating because like I hate Puck Daddy too, but she couldn't even take accountability for erasing the identities of WOC who were involved with the project. Some people approach Twitter with this weird scorecard and it honestly bothers me more any Tumblr wank.

I've talked to him when he wasn't in-character, I guess I'd call it? about women's hockey and female fans. He's very genuine in wanting to support them but he's also a relatively privileged dude who only really started paying attention to this stuff a few years ago so I feel like some of the mistakes are inevitable rookie cluelessness. I'd rather try to correct him than, like, Marek or Wysh about anything.

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

From: (Anonymous)
ayrt I have never interacted with him in anyway, but that's been the impression that I always got from the stuff he was doing. He's getting better. Plus, I notice that he's always done less jokes that seem to have women or the idea that girls want to sleep hockey players or what not as the butt of the joke or the punchline. That's also a rarity in most of the hockey podcasts/etc I listen to. Maybe I just need to find better hockey podcasts? But I really do think he's on the better end, even if some of the constructive criticism he gets is totally fair.

On the topic of other hockey podcasts:

I just recently discovered Two Bearded Ladies which is a Stars and general hockey podcast, which I've enjoyed so far. One of the women who does it is @classlicity on Twitter, who does some stats stuff that I've started following (haven't been following her long enough to know if I agree with her analytics approach and conclusions, but it seems promising so far).

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

From: (Anonymous)
There's actually a small stash of Stars-audio related stuff, which surprised me a little.

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

From: (Anonymous)
I doubt the podcast is, but are they themselves fannish? This might sound hypocritical, but I'm always looking for hockey blogs and podcasts by woman who aren't, cause I feel like even if they don't mention the RPF side, that vibe still trickles in somehow.

I don't know if they are, but they do have a bit of the same conversational vibe from the couple of podcasts I listened to. Sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn't, but I wasn't really a fan.

one of them definitely is. I used to follow her on tumblr (and had to unfollow, but that's a different story entirely). I can't say for sure if the other one is, though.

I imagine they probably are, but, tbh, most of the women I know in hockey sports fandom--almost all of whom I met not through fannish venues--are fannish in some respect. Many of them absolutely refuse to be fannish about hockey--or keep their fannish lives and their sports fan lives so totally separate that I don't know if they're into Hockey RPF, so I don't know if such a unicorn exists?

From the few eps of the podcast I've listened to, they sound like your basic millennial chicks who like hockey: very internet savvy, so subject to mentioning memes and tropes the online world is rife with; feminist, so they spent a good bit of time on the Kane thing and how he sucks (with ample trigger warnings--which are no longer just a fannish thing--before they discussed it so it could be skipped); sports fans who know a lot about hockey and their team but also other teams; ladies who crush on boys, so they mention the attractiveness of various players and their crushes.

You may not enjoy it, but I have so far. I don't know either of the ladies who do the show, so I have no idea of their fannish involvement. It doesn't come up on the podcast, nor is the podcast redolent of fannishness the way Wait, Wait, What's Icing? is.
