This is the eleventh post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

Wait, when did Erik Karlsson deactivate his tumblr?? How am I just hearing about this now? What happened? Could someone please explain?

There's no explanation, he just deactivated it quite a while ago. It's been mentioned on meme before.

The story I've heard is that he deleted because he got a bunch of hate after he posted a picture of himself in a racial stereotype costume on Instagram.

Does anyone have receipts? That sounds like the kind of thing that'd get screencapped to hell and back, if it were true.

I don't have any receipts, but my guess is that it went something like the whole xkit guy situation, where there really wasn't much to screencap-- someone Tumblr famous reposted or mentioned the pic on Tumblr, he got a flood of hate, he looked at all the weirdos in his inbox, didn't feel like responding to them, and went "it was just a costume, fuck this shit I'm out" and decided to stick to Twitter in the future.

My personal belief is that he finally discovered RPF and noped hard out of tumblr because of it.

How could he have been on tumblr that long without finding it ages ago though? A lot of the people he interacted with had RPF on their blogs

Maybe someone sent him something though. Knowing it exists is one thing, having people send you fic about yourself is another

Now I'm imagining him deleting his tumblr in a huff because the wrong pairings are popular or someone sent him fic of himself with someone he hates. "I would never!"

No, nonny, he deleted because fic writers kept misusing "optional skate"! He thought he could ignore it, but it bugged him so much he had to leave.

I have to imagine most of the guys who have more than a handful of fics about them on the internet are aware fic about them exists. Even if they're total luddites, all they need is one friend who isn't who will stumble upon it and show them because it's "hilarious." (I know for a fact this has happened with at least one player.) If Karlsson was directly interacting with fandom for that long, he surely knew.

Agreed, a friend of mine was the subject of RPF (in a super small fandom) and everyone written about was aware and semi-frequently got told about it by acquaintance/friends. I definitely believe in maintaining the 4th wall, but my personal experience leads me to believe way more players know about it then we'd like to think.

I mean, it could be any of these, or it could just be that he'd grown past reblogging sad music on weekend nights rather than going out with his gf. I think he got the tumblr right after he divorced, and it was rough going for a bit in terms of content (sad music and self-affirmation messages), but I think he probably just got busy and couldn't maintain the demands of it - answering every ask, etc. - once he had more of a life.

Yep. I always forget how young he actually is, since he's been in the league since he was 19 or 20. But his tumblr was, well, a bit mopey for a little while. Which - fair enough.

NA This is my theory. If I have the timing right he created it after a year when he when he got his achilles sliced, got divorced and Alfie left himthe Sens for Detroit.

Right. I mean, he seemed like a genuinely decent dude who didn't have the greatest year, and his message of being kind to yourself managed not to fall into complete self-absorption. His taste in music didn't really equal mine, but he seemed much busier and happier toward the end of his tumblr run than he originally did.

It's likely that he did find tumblr too high maintenance he's been with his current gf since 2013 so I don't know how much of a factor that part in particular was.

As the other nonnie said, maybe the achilles played into it? Like, he really would reblog sad stuff at times (unless his queue was set up weird) when I assumed a pro-athlete would be out and about, and toward the end it was mostly vacation photos. I just don't think it was fandom's actions, is all.
