All of this hair-splitting is stepping away from the original argument, that leaving kudos is encouraging people who post new K/T fic to do more of it. Can anyone think of a way kudos would discourage that? I don't know what on earth kudos means personally to the person who left it, but to me as a writer it's an upvote or like, and what you mostly get instead of comments, so about 90% of the reason to post a story to ap3 at all (instead of just showing your friends).

That's why I and other people are noting who leaves kudos and making assumptions that they're fine with writers continuing to write it. You've basically just paid the author.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

I just think there's a long way from "left a kudos on a fic" to "rape apologist scum who needs to be added to The List."

Someone makes a post saying they support Kane? Yep.

Reblogs someone else's support of Kane? Fine.

Presses a button at the end of a fic? Are you for real?

This is a witch hunt

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
I feel like people are being a bit hyperbolic on both ends of the spectrum, here. Nobody's actually making a list of people to chase out of fandom.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
They are making actual lists, though.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
What are the consequences of these lists, then?

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Shaming insecure/new fans out of fandom and encouraging harassment (how many anon messages do you think maja-li has received on tumblr?).

Imagine a group of BNFs in your fandom compiled a list of Bad People and you were on it. That's horrible.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

It's odd that you mention the person in all this who I perhaps care least about receiving anon hate.

Anon hate is a dick move, I don't care who gets it.

DA - There are new fans of K/T?

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Not a K/T fan but I was introduced to fandom through S/G fic with no prior knowledge of hockey so I can see how someone could stumble across K/T fic and only realise what Patrick Kane has done until after they involve themselves in fandom.

I'd imagine it could effect hockey in general - even if you don't do K/T, you might see the list and wonder what else they're judging people for and nope out.

If Kane doesn't go to jail and continues to play, there will be. Do you think Kane and Toews will just magically stop being photographed together or that their PR will stop aggressively pushing the KaneAndToews narrative?

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
people are not going on lists as being Bad People. They are going on lists as being people who have publically praised or defended Patrick Kane or works involving Patrick Kane. That is happening to them because they have done that and people are reacting to that. I am afraid that is an inevitable consequence of Doing Stuff: sometimes people don't like the stuff that you do.

It's not like people are randomly going around picking on people who can't spell or whatever. Some people want to avoid Patrick Kane and his fans. They're allowed to do that. They don't have to be supported just because they might be new to fandom.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
A. Making a witch hunt list in the first place is horrible.

B. Have you seen the list? Someone who "said they disagree with everything maja_li posted yet continues to talk with them??" is on the list - it's not just the vocal Kane supporters

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)

Yeah, a list like that 100% encourages harassment. It's one thing to want to know so you don't accidentally follow someone who is pro-Kane and thinks the victim is lying, but there is no way the effects of lists like that would stop there. It'd be an immediate gateway to harassment. It's even worse in the context of something like Tumblr, which is prone to pile-ons anyway, and where many of the fans are young.

I am really, really opposed, in case you couldn't tell.

Eugh, you're really dedicated to making this sound as awful as possible, aren't you? We're all adults here, or at least old enough to start learning about adult consequences. The problem with anon criticism is that they can escalate (which there has been no evidence of), not that they exist in the first place. It's not like it's a list of Bad People Who Ship What I Do Not or something as equally shallow , it's making sure people who don't want to associate with Kane/Kane fic supporters don't accidentally get involved with them. If you want to write and read fic about someone in the middle of a rape investigation in a fandom that isn't feeling it, you aren't guaranteed a warm and inviting reception.

Actual lists that are being posted somewhere? I have seen people say they are taking note for personal use, but is there some fandom BNF (and who even ARE the BNFs in this fandom? I certainly have no idea, beyond K/T and S/G people, but since I don't actually care about those ships, I have no clue) publishing such lists somewhere that some large number of people are likely to see them?

As I read further, I see some such thing exists, which I agree is fucking stupid. I understand the impulse, but blacklists and whitelists in fandom have never been a good idea.

I am repulsed by all the people who are blithely willing to read/write Kane regardless of his actions, as the whole MajaLi meta brought out, because I genuinely believe continuing to like porn about their fave is more important to them than an actual woman who was raped, but fuck lists.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Yes they are. There's a google doc floating around on twitter. I was sad to see a favorite author of mine supplying names to add to it.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Wait, seriously? Really hope it's not an author I like.

Would it be wrong to ask for the link? I get that fandom can be extreme at times, but this is...something else.

Leaving kudos on a Kane fic tells me that person is okay with fic about Kane still being written. Personally, I find that idea so abhorrent that I side eye whoever holds that view. You're obviously free to read all the fic about Kane you want, but others are also free to think critically of you for doing so.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
DA - That's fine, don't add them to your personal list.
I honestly don't care if people read K/T, write it, kudos it.
Some people do, and you aren't going to stop them using a kudos as a method to tell who is still into K/T.

Ah, yes, a witch hunt. Never again the not being friends with people whose opinions repulse you time.

I don't want to be friends with these people (and I'm sure they don't want to be friends with people who are disgusted by their attitude) so the list is a handy resource.
