#24 – Not Sure If Serious or Playing Dumba

This is the twenty-fourth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

I still follow a Hawks blog on tumblr, because they were one of the very first people I followed when I signed up, back before either of us even watched hockey and I have trouble letting go of things. The past couple months they've been reblogging a bunch of Toews' twitterings and, honestly, I am 95% sure that the Blackhawks just hired someone to tweet for him, following him around to public events, sightings, etc, because it reads EXACTLY like fanon Jonny from fic. The hockey robot-Kaner-my-hero-awkward-thanking is entirely like I'm reading a fake twitter.

That hadn't occurred to me, but now that you mention it, it does make sense. That twitter is just so weird. And maybe this is way to cynical of me, but it was really nice timing for the Hawks to have their most popular, marketable, likable (by the general public) player join twitter...

All the tweets I see on my dash are so #onbrand for fic!Toews that it confuses me because I always (bitterly, I ADMIT IT) assumed he was a huge douche irl??? Like obviously he still could be and your theory could be correct but making dad/old man jokes about himself? lying about being out of shape? I'M VERY RELUCTANTLY CHARMED AND I HATE IT.

no no no of course not, but this is one of the first glimpses I've had of what he's really like, as somebody who doesn't follow the Hawks and I'm surprised how close it is to fic Toews. I didn't think he would be rude on twitter or anything but if I had to guess I would have thought it would have been more sponsored tweets and typical shit like that, I wasn't expecting his real (?) personality.

See that's why it seems like it's fake- his fanon personality is taken from the few facts fans know of him (he's a relatively private player) so we don't know much about him. That's why the twitter seems suspicious because there is no way the personalities match (especially with all the rumors and stuff surrounding him and his lifestyle)

Yeah, the more I think about it the more it would make sense for it to be PR. So many player twitters nowadays are just sponsored tweets and occasionally a random picture to show that they're not just a robot, because I think they were all collectively told that the best twitter strategy is saying it best by saying nothing at all. His is kind of too perfectly crafted in terms of personality/sponsored/interacting with teammate balance for it to be organic. But idk, maybe he really does make the tweets but it seems like somebody who's "new to social media" doesn't randomly get that lucky right off the bat in terms of knowing what to tweet and how to get broad appeal.

NA See, to me, his twitter actually seems kind of genuine in that I always had the impression he was a douchey hipster who liked yoga and organic gardening.

I'm sure there is a PR team (or his mom) telling him to post this and post that because the fans would love it, but when I think of manufactured/fake, I think more of the types of twitters where I'm pretty sure the players never even touch the twitter and their publicist posts all their canned responses and charity promotions.

How do the personalities not match? Are you seriously suggesting that rumors are more valid than a verified account? I'm not saying it couldn't be a PR person, but the notion that rumors about a player are the standard to which a verified account has to conform is absurd.

Yeah, the whole twitter seems like the ~idea of him he projects in interviews, which is poles apart from the gross shit you hear rumors about.

Agreed. Apparently he kicked up a massive fuss when they wanted to film at his house for that What's Your Goal video and he's so paranoid about people having his number, he only communicates with some people via text messaging services.

His 'Twitter' doesn't exactly strike me as someone who's private like that.

Honestly I kind of hope his mom is running it. At one point I think she did most of his personal PR stuff (there's a hilarious exchange on one of his cup days where someone asks him where they're going next and he says "uhhhh, you'll have to ask my mom"

Fanon fic!Jonny is a very niche view of him from fic-writing, hockey tumblr fandom though, I feel like if this were the case whoever would be tweeting for him would be trying to appeal to the broader Hawks fanbase, aka the dudebros. I mean, not that they can overtly have him be a dudebro but they wouldn't be liking things on twitter about organic juice cleanses either.

This is what I think. I can definitely buy that it's Interview Face Toews, but it's really not what I would expect from a generic ghostwritten account. And we already knew he likes yoga and cares about global warming anyway, tumblr fanon didn't make that up.

Yeah, I saw a dudebro on Reddit describe his Twitter as "surprisingly weird" recently so if his Twitter is all a PR creation there's a pretty big demographic out there that appears to be more confused by it then anything. I 100% believe he gets advice or guidance on what to tweet, but he probably writes the actual tweets and posts them himself , imo.

Uhh, what? I'm not sure how closely you followed it, but did you miss the part where he replied to Kane, deleted it, and replied to the Kane again 3 days later? How would that be consistent with a PA? That's classic drunken tweet regret. Also, why wouldn't Kane's twitter have followed him back weeks earlier if this was all a Hawks PR thing? People putting forth this theory a) don't want him to be likable or b) don't want him to be dislikable (by talking to Kane).

Yeah, people try to make things more complicated than they actually are. And I think that a lot of people here are charmed by the weirdness of his twitter account and hate that fact since on meme anything Hawks related=evil.

I think a lot of the problem does tend to stem from the black-and-white view I've seen a lot of people hold on the Internet nowadays. Yeah, Toews can have shitty ideas about sexual assault and be doing coke and still be a pretty funny dude sometimes. People who hold ideas you disagree with aren't going to go around with that idea stamped on their forehead or be an evil strawman for you to hate all the time.

That being said, the weirdness of his feed makes me miss when Jonathan Quick used to tweet things because my overwhelming response to that was pure, unabashed joy. Here was this dude that generally didn't like attention talking about the rabbits that had been fucking in his backyard. It was truly a loss I grieved over at length.

Yep, that's exactly it. The idea that everyone who disagrees with you, even on a substantive issue like sexual assault, is inherently evil to the core, is something that people like to cling to because it's easy.

Also: does anyone seriously give a fuck about the cocaine (3+ years ago)? Is that really a pedestal people on this meme are standing on? Because by many accounts, it's not uncommon in the NHL. I don't really give a fuck about Toews, but that's the last thing I'd condemn him for.

I think it's easy to point at the coke thing. I don't like it (or any drugs), but he's squarely in the demographic where I'd expect widespread social use. It's not even on the list of things I'd criticize him for.
