#11 - Kopitar Prefers Amps That Go to Eleven

This is the eleventh post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

I don't think anyone on that team has done one? I'd love Jordie Benn to do one because of the undrafted, chl-to-ahl-to-nhl thing. The guy has a tattoo telling him to never quit.

See, when I said him, I was thinking about the undrafted, working up the ladder thing but I couldn't tell if that was a part of it for me or not. It probably is if you're hitting on that too. He definitely seems like the dude who would be into telling anyone "No, you CAN play! Never quit! Don't give up on your dreams!" (bares his bicep as evidence)

He'd be a great choice.

Yeah, I think only Penguin who did one was Orpik, and Tanner Glass before he was a Pen. Itd be nice to see one of the guys do one.

Maybe some of the recent draftees, 2013ish? Idk. Maybe it's just the summer of eternal disappointment talking, but I'm kind of done with YCP until someone does come out. It's important but it feels meaningless.

I can't help but think that Michael Sam's situation has made it less likely for current players to come out. There has to be some former hockey players who are out to family/friends but haven't spoken oublically about it, I wish one of them would come out publically.

I came across an article before where the author didn't name any names, but that there are two players in the NHL who are out only to their families and trusted friends. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more.

I'm waiting for a former player to come out before any current ones do. The first currently-playing out player is probably going to go through a lot of shit, and I don't blame any of them for not coming out.

I don't think it will happen anytime soon. The NFL, NBA, and MLB all had retired players come out long before any active players did. Plus, I've read articles where (straight)former NFL/NBA players talked about how they had played with gay teammates before; I've never heard an NHL player make a comment like that. Even in those captain roundtable interviews, Crosby, Toews, and Lundqvist were pretty awkward when commenting on how they would handle having a gay teammate.

I know what you mean. On that note though, I remember one of Patrick Burke's reddit ama's where he said he believed a player would come out within 8 months or so, which I calculated would be the end of August last year (if I remember correctly).

I'm remembering Nathan MacKinnon's supportive Burke Tweet and wondering if he's ever been tapped to do one. He seems like he would be very enthusiastic.

TBH I wonder if YCP thinks that the Olympics and the discussion that happened as a result sort of filled their need for those kinds of videos. A few of the most influential names in the league (Crosby, Toews, Lundqvist) all gave statements about acceptance. I won't forget that Lundqvist first gave a very tepid response to the issue before the mic was sort of forced into his face at an NHL media week, and neither Crosby nor Toews were all that passionate in their sentiments, but I can understand YCP being like "See? Crosby says this shouldn't even be an issue and he grew up learning tolerance, everyone just be like Crosby, the end."

Was Crosby's Sochi interview about this issue before or after the roundtable interview with Toews and Lundqvist?

I don't know if they use more than one person per team. I'm sure they could, but I don't know if they try. Because Gabe is our YCP guy and does other anti-bullying work (and has tweeted anti-rape stuff before as well) so I tend to think of him as our go-to social justice dude, and I don't know if they tap more than one player per team. I'd love it if they did though, because I've always gotten the vibe that Nate would really be a good ally.

I would love to see a retired legend do it, because I think that's actually quite encouraging. I bet a young kid would take comfort in being able to be like, "Well Wayne Gretzky isn't afraid to support me!" Plus, that does help dispel some of the old boy's club image a little more.

But I, like the other nonnies, am mostly holding me breath for more people close to the NHL to feel comfortable coming out. I think Brandon Burke did very awesome, brave stuff, but for the son of an executive who may or may not have been pursuing a career in the field to still be the closest person to the NHL to come out does not reflect well on the league. Even some executives or scouts or something coming out would be good, although I'm sure they'd get shit.

Patrick Burke said a while ago that Braden Holtby was going to do one, but I never saw it. It's possible it is up on the web site and I just missed it.

His wife apparently really wanted to do one, which makes sense. Just about the only time she ever tweets is to say something about marriage equality or LGBT rights.

Holtby was in the one of the mass-player vids, IIRC. Unless you meant a separate individual one, in which case I've not seen that either.
