#11 - Kopitar Prefers Amps That Go to Eleven

This is the eleventh post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

That doesn't detract the from the fact that it serves as encouragement for the writer- only you know the reason why you pressed the kudos button so intention doesn't come into play.

Huh. I've never thought of kudos as encouragement. There's so little effort in pressing the button that I don't even take it to mean anything. Only comments serve for encouragement in any way. Perhaps it's because of all my years posting fic to LJ that I don't measure anything by kudos? I definitely think that being used to the LJ culture of comments changes how someone views kudos.

That someone was interested in your work, took the time to read to the end, and wants to acknowledge you for your labor without putting themselves out

Because the word kudos has an actual meaning outside of fandom, it really surprises me that some people don't see it as praising the fic. I'm pretty sure that it is most commonly used as a positive marker though so the safest bet is to assume that's how author's will see it.

I also spent years on LJ writing fic, and I view kudos as feedback, so I don't think it's strictly an LJ comment culture way of viewing things, although that probably does have some effect on it for some people.

I also write for tiny rarepairs and smaller fandoms in gneral, so it's not like a get a ton of hits, kudos, or comments. I think the size of the fandom and pairing plays into things as well. If you're writing things that are lucky to break 100 hits or reach the double digits just in kudos, you're probably more likely to view kudos as encouragment. (I could be wrong, though.)

Spent a good 6 or so years in LJ-based fandom and I don't really agree. Kudos are pretty generally seen as encouragement to an author. What do you think they symbolise, if not "I read this and liked it"?

If intention doesn't come into play, there's no reason to assume that it's encouraging the writer to write more of that specific character for most of the people out there.

I don't follow your logic, my point was that the intention of the person who left kudos doesn't come into play as it doesn't affect how the writer sees it??

Authors on the meme, do you feel encouraged to write more based on the kudos you receive?

Not encouraged to write more, per se, but I take them as an "I liked this." It's not like AO3 offers "I read this, I guess" vs. "THIS WAS AWESOME BUT I AM SHY!!!" kudos options. They're all the same, and so I choose to believe they're just another kind of "like" button. Which is also how I use it on other people's stories.

I would write regardless, because I have a drive to write. I have some fics that have over 100 kudos and some that have none. By the time I'm done with a fic, I hate it so much and feel like such a crappy writer that usually kudos just helps me feel less crappy and that maybe my story was useful to another person in some way.

Yeah, they are definitely encouraging.

I have the same small number of people that I don't think I've ever talked to but that seem to kudos almost everything I write. When I get a kudos outside of that group, especially when it's from an author I like/admire, that makes me happy. Comments are even better but I don't get very many.

Obviously? I mean, even if I'm writing something that is mostly self-motivated and I wouldn't care if people didn't kudos, kudos are never discouraging for writing more. The only effect they have is in the "write more" direction.

I agree with the nonny above, this is the weirdest kudos wank ever.

Very honestly, I haven't written anything in over a year, and when I get kudos on old stuff, my first reaction tends to be "you actually liked that piece of shit? Why?". However, my reaction is definitely atypical.

I prefer kudos to comments, so yes. Comments make me anxious and if I could turn them off I probably would.

i'd write anyway, but it's a good method of positive reinforcement for me to keep posting things. i do assume that people who kudos like the fic, and so it's gratifying if a fic gets 10% or more kudos to hits.

It can make me feel encouraged or it can do the opposite. There have been times when I've worked really, really hard on a fic and it only gets a handful of kudos, and that makes me question whether all the work was worth it. But usually that doesn't happen, and kudos serve as a confidence booster.

Yeah, I was just trying to figure out how to phrase what you just said. People have made up their minds about whether or not Kane fic (and Kane fic support) is acceptable, and if you disagree with them, you're just going to have to live with them not supporting your actions/decisions.
