#29 – Lay, Lie, or Laine?

This is the twenty-ninth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

It's sappy and overdramatic 100% but I liked it. There are some pretty purple lines. I'm also a horrible sucker for pining and misunderstandings. There's also not that much choice out there. I thought the pairing would have taken a little more?

Is it too soon or are things in fandom just too fractured? I keep expecting a new class juggernaut and nothing is immerging.

There is like, maybe a couple good ideas buried in this fic but dear GOD the cringey moments are so hideously cringey.

Sexuality freakout was very much through a straight teen girl who runs the line of fetishizing gay men lens and the treatment of the OFCs is Uncomfortable. There's a scene where a girl Auston hooks up with tells him she was afraid he was going to hit her?? and then when he's all "MY MOM RAISED ME BETTER I WOULD NEVER" her immediate response is "OH GOOD I THINK WE HAD A SPECIAL CONNECTION WE SHOULD DATE" and his response to that is essentially "I DONT HIT WOMEN BUT I DO HATE THEM"

Like it's a fic about internalized homophobia and maybe slightly less intentionally about internalized misogyny but GOD it tips over the yikes line so repeatedly on those subjects.

I don't normally read comments on other people's stories. But for whatever reason I clicked on the comments of the Cam Atkinson/RyJo (which I actually really enjoyed). And the first comment ends with "This is actually the second fic I've ever read where I didn't want the MCs to end up together."

And uhh. Wow. Way to not pull those punches story commentor.

after they’d been kissing in Auston’s bed for what felt like only a few minutes, even though when Auston looked at the clock, it was nearly dinnertime, meaning hours had passed.

I hate when fic authors don't have any sense of time. Did they really spend HOURS just making out, nothing else? Do you realise how long that is? And you're telling me they didn't even progress to handjobs or a bit of dry-humping? Yeah okay.

Nicky/Ovi, rated E, 12k. Summary: Sasha makes prefect in his second to last year. It's earlier than anyone but him expected, but right on track for his two year plan, which is: be head boy, get a contract to play Quidditch professionally, and beat Bäckström off in the baths. It’s that last part which has been stymying him consistently since Bäckström arrived at Koldovstoretz.

It's the rare Harry Potter AU (at least ime) that has almost nothing to do with Hogwarts. I thought it was pretty neat, from the Russian quidditch style to the bitterly cold magic school in the Arctic circle to the ritual appeal to a god that goes a bit awry. And I liked that it ends with Nicky and Ovi still a bit uncertain about everything, which seems very fitting for kids who still haven't left school.

The Skjei/Vesey everyone's been looking forward to! It's definitely one of the better fics I've read recently, even if it didn't bring me to tears. The smut was hot, and there was just enough 'just buddies, oops, nevermind' angst to make me happy.

I can't tell if i thought this fic was decent, and some of it even quite lovely, or if i was really really turned off by the repetitive narrative device that didn't necessarily add anything (and some of the other devices used to convey voice, tone, etc). Maybe the latter. Maybe both?
